Trying to Conceive

by KateV, Aug 25, 2007 09:17PM
I'm 29 years old and my husband is 32 and we've been trying to conceive for 2 years. Semen analysis was good, blood work (FSH, LH & Prog) was good, and I had a clear HSG (tubes open and normal uterus). We've been timing intercourse to have sex 2 or 3 times/ week and don't know what else to do. IUI and IVF is too expensive and we're hoping to conceive without that. My doctor just gave me clomid to try even though I seem to be ovulating fine. The only problem we've had was that during the HSG, the doctor had trouble inserting the catheter through my cervical os -- it was very small and he couldn't get it all the way into my uterus. Would a small cervical os cause me to be infertile? Or will it just take longer than average to conceive? Please help!!!

I don't know if a smaller cervix opening would cause infertility.  You didn't mention how your cervical mucous is.  If you are not having fertile cervical fluid at the time you are ovulating, it could be causing some trouble.  Fertile cervical fluid is egg white consistency and stretchy.  I don't ever have this kind of fluid.  I had surgery on my cervix and I believe it doesn't behave correctly at ovulation time.  Fortunately, my husband is in the military and his insurance covers a lot of infertilty treatments.  We just did our 4th IUI this week and are in the two week wait.  A lot of women on this forum swear by a product called Preseed.  It acts like fertile cervical fluid and is not harmful to sperm.  You can find it at Preseed.com.  Good luck to you!

How does Preeseed work? Does it make you more fertial? Or just help the lil spermies get there?

When I had my lap and hsg done, my obyn found the same issue. Not sure what the os is referring to, but I'm assuming it means it was very tight? ( sorry if I got it wrong )My cervix was very tight and the doc dilated it during the op, 5mm I think she said. She said that it may have prevented the sperm from travelling where they need to go.  Seeing as your dh semen analysis was fine, you are ovulating and the sperm can get where they need to go ( ie cervix open and open fallopian tubes ) all should be fine.
Good luck

My cervix has also been closed up both times my doctor tried to get in there - once for the hsg and once for an IUI.  I have often worried if this is what is hindering my fertility, but my doctor told my husband that even if the cervix is really small, it is still like a big water hose to a tiny little sperm.  Anyway, I was dilated both times.  Once in February, and once in July.  The doctor said the dilation lasts a long time, so if it has been a short time since your hsg, you are probably still open.

Are you using ovulation predictor kits?  Those tell you your 2 best days to conceive.  Also, I have the book Taking Charge of Your Fertility, and it tells you about all kinds of other signs of your fertile period.  Anyway, keep us updated.
