ad_06 - IUI

by Tanker Chic, Oct 14, 2007 02:34PM
Ashley,

Hopefully it doesn't bother you that I wrote to you over here.. but as I said the email system doesn't allow many characters and if you max it out, the whole message disappears..

I don't know how familar you are with the meds and i'm no expert, but from my experience there are basically two types. The type that makes your follicles mature like clomid and the type that makes the mature follicle release the egg like HCG trigger shot.

I am able to ovulate on my own, so I didn't need the clomid to develop a mature follicle but we did use a very low dose for the first two IUIs.  The standard minimum dose is 50mg.. for the first IUI I took half a pill (so 25mg) and the second IUI I took a quarter of a pill (so 12.5mg).. for the third IUI, I did not take clomid at all.  The RE said the purpose of the clomid (in my situation) was to regulate my cycle and help time the IUI. My cyles were pretty regular within 2-3 days, but I guess this just gave him more control over it.  I took the clomid cycle days 5-9.

The second part of it is the HCG trigger shot.  We used the hcg trigger shot for all 3 of my IUIs and that was for the purpose of timing IUI with ovulation.

If your cycles are very irregular, I can see the benefit of taking the clomid even if you already ovulate on your own.  If your cyles are pretty regular than you really don't need it. BUT if you are getting IUI, I think they should use the hcg trigger shot.  Guessing when ovulation occurs is fine for timed intercourse, but if you or your insurance are paying for IUI, they need to take the guess work out of it or at least as much as possible.  Here is everything we did for each IUI. I got pg on the first and third try.

#1 IUI: 25mg Clomid cd5-9, u/s on cd12 to confirm follicle size, hcg trigger shot at 11pm cd12 and IUI at 11am on cd14.

#2 IUI: 12mg clomid cd5-9, u/s on cd12, hcg trigger shot at 11pm cd12 and IUI at 11am cd14.

#3 IU: No clomid, u/s on cd10, u/s on cd12, hcg trigger shot at 11pm cd12 and IUI at 11am cd14.

I think the key thing was to have the IUI 36hrs after hcg trigger shot.  I didn't list it but on #1 and #3, I had an addition u/s in the morning before the IUI (so about 32hr after shot).. Both times the egg was still there but was just about to ovulate.  RE said you could tell because it had jagged edges.  You don't need that u/s, RE did it just for his own knowledge.. but it was very cool becasuse it confirmed that the timing was perfect.  I'm sorry this is soooooo long winded but I wanted to make sure I gave you all the info. If I have confused you or if you have any other questions let me know..

Hi. I am new to this site and have been all over asking all types of questions. I came upon your post after some searching and I hope its okay that I ask you a question or two.(??)

I have very irregular periods and have been ttc with my husband for a year and a half. I took 50mg of clomid in April, May (took June off) then July and August. No BFP yet. On 7/31/09 I was given the trigger shot and then did an IUI on 8/1/09. No luck. Started spotting and then got my period on 8/15/09. The doctor wants me to do another round with the clomid, trigger shot and IUI.

Someone posed the question that if my husband's sperm analysis came back fine then why was I doing the IUI. I don't know. I was just doing what my doctor suggested and what she thought was best.

Soooo..I know the clomid helped me ovulate..but do I definately need the trigger shot to help release the egg?? Do you think I even need to worry about the shot and/or the IUI?

Any insight or help you could give me would be greatly appreciated!! Thanks!
