any success with metformin?

I am 26yo and have tried clomid (up to 150 mg) and it was not successful in producing ovulation.  I have never been diagnosed with PCOS.  I went today to see the RE for the first time.  I have always had irregular periods.  He gave me the option of trying metformin for a couple of months.  Has anyone had any success (ie: it unduced ovualtion and/or got you pregnant) with metformin?  How long did you have to take it?  Were the side effects bad?  Should it be taken in conjunction with clomid (he did not say anything about taking it with clomid)?  He also gave me the option of skipping the metformin and going straight to injections (however they will not be covered by insurance). What should I do?  I would love some advice!

I've not been on metformin but have read many success stories from it. I don't know what your financial situation is, but injectables are very $$. I have hear up to $3000, ouch. For myself, I will exhaust the less $ methods b4 the big $ ones.

I just started taking metformin a couple of weeks ago.  Up until now I had been taking 100 mg of clomid and just getting maybe one follie and one very big cyst.  This month, I took the metformin and 50 mg of clomid, and I had 2 nice sized follies and no cysts.  I consider that a metformin success.  Just had an iui today - my first one - will have to just wait now and see how it goes.  Waiting...waiting...waiting.

I feel I had success with it.  I was taking Metaformin for 2yrs with no success.  I was with an RE taking injections and everything.  In Nov. I saw a different RE in my practice and we realized I was taking it wrong.  I was taking it a night (full dose) and I should of been taking it at meals.  He prescribed me the extended release metaformin which you take the full dose before bedtime.  I started a cycle at the end of Nov.  I took Fermera/Repronex, went in and had nothing....bumped up my Repronex and five days later I had 4 mature follies.  I triggered that night.  The day after Christmas I found out I was pg (after 4 years of trying) and on Jan 11th I found out I was having twins.  My girls are due anytime now with a scheduled c-section on the 28th.  I also had lost 11lbs and didn't know it.  It has also kept my weight gain where it is supposed to be for a twin pregnancy and I didn't get gestational diabetes.  I take 2000mg a day and I think it has done wonders.  So yes, I do think it was a major contributor to me getting pg.  It was a cycle like no other.

SAME HERE I WAS NEVER DIAGNOSED WITH PCOS, BUT MY DOC PUT ME ON MET & CLOMID FOR 3 MONTHS. I START MET THIS WEEK AFTER MY HSG.HE WANTED ME TO DO THE HSG TO INCREASE MY CHANCES OF BECOMING PREG. I AS WELL AS TINA HAVE HEARD MANY SUCCESSFUL STORIES. AS OF NOW I DONT HAVE ANY SIDE EFFECTS WITH MET. I WOULD SAY THE ONLY TIME MY STOMACH FELT WEIRD WAS THE MORNING AFTER OF TAKING MET. IM TAKING IT AT NIGHT, SO I WONT FEEL THE SIDE EFFECTS AS MUCH.I GOT TO GIVE IT TO TINA THE INJECTABLES CAN BE EXPENSIVE. KEEP US POSTED AS TO WHAT YOU WILL DECIDE.

I was not diagnosed with PCOS either, but was given Metformin and Clomid together and six rounds later, I'm pregnant with triplets!  23 weeks today and we're all the picture of health.  I'd give it a try!!  :)

hey im 19 years old and i had been struggling with my weight for years and niether my parents nor myself could figure out what was wrong.  I ate rather well for someone my size but i was still gainning wieght where by the time i was 16 i was an even 200 pounds.  After i found out that i was 200 pounds my mom started me on birth control and it started to help but i wasnt losing the weight i needed to get rid of.  When i went to the docter for a pap i found out i had type 2 diabetes caused by PCOS.  I was scared and 17 years old.  I was perscribed metformin at 850 mg every day.  it helped slightly but i was then bumped up to 500 mg twice a day.  I am making an appointment to meet with my docter again to see if its helpping because the weight still isnt going away.  But atleast i know what is wrong with me and it wasnt my fault... i always thought it was my fault i was so big ... its wonderful to know that im not alone

I was diagnosed with PCOS last month, but honestly I knew something was wrong for some years. Mine i could say is a little different, I don't have any cysts on my ovaries and never missed a period, in fact mine are always very heavy and it always comes every month. I have always been a larger women, even as a child. My Doc put me on Metformin 500mg. Everyone is different with side affects I had a upset stomach the first week, I add a mulit-vitman with it and it really helped the upset. Nearly every website you find about PCOS it talks about diet and exercise, it does work i've losted weight by  eating three balance meals a day with walking. I feel better, having a positive outlook on it,  has helped me deal with PCOS. PCOS can make you depressed, ive been there(crying thinking I won't be able to have children) but everyone is different to med's. My best advise is find a good physician that you like and feel comfortable around. Dont let a doctor tell  you to be on BC when your TTC, its ********, try the metformin and if fails go to the next step.keep your heads up and keep trying.everything happens for a reason. :)
