hcg and fetal heartbeat

by arlene231, Jun 08, 2009 08:27AM
i went in for an ultrasound at 7 weeks, and there was a heartbeat, fetal pole and yolk sac. they said everything seemed fine. in the mean time, i got the results from hcg tests that were taken the previous week. they were 7039 at around 5 1/2 weeks, 9897 five days later and then 10, 852 three days later. the hcgs were taken prior to the ultrasound, but i am concerned that they did not rise appropriately. i am very stressed now and i know that is not doing the fetus any good. i know that the ultrasound is ultimately more important than the hcg tests, but does it mean that there is an impending miscarriage?

Hi Arlene! They say once the levels get high like that, the doubling theory no longer applies. Plus, once progress can be viewed on ultrasound, that is a lot more accurate than HCG numbers anyway. So try not to worry and enjoy your pregnancy! Congrats!

From now on the u/s is more accurate. My Re doesn't take the hcg anymore once the embryo is visible in u/s cause is more reliable.Seeing a heartbeat lowers your chances of m/c so try not to stress and enjoy your baby.
