ovulating before trigger shot?

by nshap, Aug 31, 2009 08:36PM
I was on follistim for 8 nights from the 3rd day of my cycle. I usually ovulate around day 11 or 12. I went in on Friday (day 11) for an ultrasound and I had 3 follicles.  My dr measured them and told me to come back Tuesday.  From what I can remember (I wish I had written it down), I had one follicle on the left side and two on the right, sizes between 14-16 (one was possibly 18).  I voiced my concern that I would ovulate before Tuesday, based on my cycle but he told me not to worry. On Sunday I started cramping w/ what felt like ovulation cramps and my cervical fluid was like it usually is when I ovulate.  I emailed my dr and he said to come in today (Monday).
When I went in today, the dr told me that I hadn't ovulated. Usually the ultrasound screen is facing me and he shows me the follicles and measures them.  He didn't do that this time.  He printed out two pictures which did not show follicles.  When I questioned him, he said it was a pic of the uterine lining.   Anyway, he had the nurse adminster the hcg trigger shot and told me to come back tomorrow for iui.
Obviously I don't want to pay for iui if the window has passed. He insists it hasn't.  But the whole thing felt weird.  Does anyone know why a dr would print pics of the uterine lining and not the follicles?  Also the bill said "follicle study."  I should add, this is a solo practice dr not a large clinic...

Hmmm.... I hope your doctor wouldn't do that... Have you taken your temp? (to see if it's elevated?) is this your first month using an Hcg trigger shot? Why do you need it if you ovulate on your own?? I know in my case I have to use the trigger shot to even ovulate...I also cramp before O (could be your follicles growing)... But if it makes you feel any better my RE does take pictures of my lining!

Sorry I was probably no help...

This is my first month using follistim and hcg.  I'm not sure why I need the trigger shot if I ovulate on my own--he didn't tell me to use the ovulation predictor, just to come in Tuesday.  I thought it was odd he wouldn't show me the follicles today.  I should've insisted but tend to be intimidated by doctors.
If I hadn't had cramping AND egg-white-type cervical fluid yesterday, I'd believe him--but it's just weird that he didn't show me the follicles. Last Friday I came in saying I was worried I was going to ovulate before the shot and he showed me the three follicles and said "see, you haven't ovulated."
It does help to know that your dr takes pics of your lining, though.

Well, I would bet you did O, & IF you didn't you were/are just about too!  I get REALLY bad O pain, w/w out meds & CM, then when it goes away is when I am pretty darn sure I O'd  In fact this has been confirmed via US 2x's.  I have O pain, 12 hours later I go in for US & I have O'd.
I DO think its weird he wouldn't show you your follies...thats the FUNNEST part for us, makes all the meds were taking worth it to see those puppies grow! lol
Did you guys bd at all the past 3-5 days???  I HOPE you did!

I O on my own, thats not my problem, BUT w/both my med cycles they give me the trigger cuz they said I have a good chance of NOT O due to the meds I was on, so they gave it to me to make sure I O & to control how bug my follies got.

I'm sorry you feel your RE is not being honest, that really stinks ;(  But I'd say our women's intuition & our bodies signals are USUALLY spot on.

Id ask him to check your follicles again before the IUI and have him show you them on the screen... Tell him you believe you already Od and don't wanna pay for the iui unless you see them!

But one other thing i forgot to mention is I also did get the ewcm a day before I did trigger....so 3 days before O... But every woman is different!

Good luck & let us know what happens!!

Since it will have only been approx 24 hrs since the trigger shot, the follicles should still be visible, right? I emailed my dr and said I wanted to see the follicles before the insemination--my husband thinks he prob will not email back. We'll see. But now I'm nervous to have someone I don't trust put something in me.  Prior to all this he told me that fertility drugs have no side effects--none--but from what I've read, this isn't true at all.

hmm.
well i never get scanned before an iui with trigger, cause it is a minimum of 36 hours before i ovulate.
when i have iui w/o a trigger they scan me.
i don't know why they do that.
my insurance pays for the scan so what's the big deal?

is there a nurse there? can you call her and get the follicle size off the chart? if not i would call your insurance company about him if you get more bad vibes. iui is good $ for them.

When I asked the dr about scanning before the iui he said that the egg is released 12-36 hours after the trigger shot.  And when I asked if he took a pic of the follicles yesterday, he said no, just of the uterine lining. That seems odd.  Dont' they usually take pics of the follicles w/ measurements?  My ins co doesn't pay for infertility so this is all out of pocket.  I hate feeling like someone is taking advantage of my desire to have a baby.  My husband says just do the iui and if I don't get pregnant, switch drs and have the medical records faxed to the new dr and file a complaint if anything seems fishy.

My RE doesn't usually do a scan before IUI either...but I'm sure if I insisted he would (esp if I was paying for it).. As a matter of fact I was cramping before I had my iui last month & we were supposed to do the iui at 11am (36hrs after trigger) but dh sperm count was bad so he had to give another sample so we didn't do the iui till like 1:30p & I was concerned with me already Oing and both the docs (2 work at the clinic) and the nurse told me that you won't Ovulate until approx 40hrs after trigger...the soonest would be 36hrs but then the egg should be viable for another 12-24 hrs so not to worry! I totally trust my RE's!! So I'm thinking that the 12 hrs they told you was a little early! Bottom line is they should show you something...esp if you are paying out of pocket!! Then if not, I'd definately look for another doc!!

l like DH's plan. See what happens this month. And then get the records. If you pay for an U/S this all seems silly. His turning of the screen is the only thing that bothers me. Even when I had a miscarriage they let me see the baby at 14 weeks with no HB. So it is certainly not out of compassion. You have a right to see the scan. Good luck and by the way I am sorry this mistrust is adding to an already stressful time TTC.
