My little Vent

by momsalittleoff, Jul 03, 2009 09:00PM
So, I decided that I needed to get out of the house more because I'm feeling
isolated here. I told my husband I would start going grocery shopping with him
because that is about all we can do right now on our budget. The grocery store
and running errands are about it for us.

We went to our local warehouse style grocery store that opened a year ago. Its
one of those "bag your own" type stores and the prices are wonderful. Problem is
the place is always packed. 15 isles open, all with clerks, and lines at each
one. Its huge and wonderful and full of life, so I love going there to get in
touch with the world, so to speak.

Problem is, there are never any open disabled parking places and they only have
two disabled carts working every time I'm there. I have to decide between my
manual wheelchair (VA won't let me have a motorized one unless I'm an amputee)
and my cane. Since I don't want my husband to push me all that way, and because
my arms will hurt like crazy for days afterwords if I wheel myself, I go with my
cane and by the time I'm done, I'm in misery.

I finally got irritated enough today to write a letter and complain. With all
the business they make, they should be able to provide better service to the
disabled customers they have. Every time I go, I see disabled people waiting at
the front of the store for a cart. Sitting on an uncomfortable bench.

Sorry for the long winded post. But I needed to vent.LOL

Do you have a large Wal-Mart nearby?  Some of their stores have grocery inside.  I suggest this because they always have plenty of motorized carts available.  I have run into the same problem at certain stores...so I tend to go to the ones who offer better access.

Also, have your hubby drop you off at the entrance of the store.  This way, if there are no spots available, you don't have to walk a mile, lol.  It is absolutely within your legal rights to inform others about inappropriate handicap access.  If you do not get a satisfactory response, you can contact the govt. agency responsible for ADA laws.

I'm glad you posted your "little vent".  I haven't had to regularly use the motorized carts--yet, but with my pain issues, I have used them in the large warehouse stores a few times.  With those few times I noticed another issue that seemed to happen every time I would go into the one store in particular, the motorized carts would all either be low on power or have all their power drained.  I haven't been in one of these stores for quite a long time and after I noticed this particular problem, I'm not in a big hurry to shop in the warehouse stores either.  That isn't the only reason for not going into those stores for me, but since we're talking about ADA access with the motorized carts, I thought it was worth mentioning.
