So frustrated

by toadaleh, Jun 29, 2009 11:15AM
I've just been to see the GP (not my usual one, he's on holiday).  I have something of a history with this guy, we've never really got on.
Anyway, I was on butrans patches for my pain, but I developed an reaction to them, so had to go about new pain control.

His response was - I don't think you should have anything, you just need to be a bit more determined, a bit more grit, oh and CFS is a socially constructed disease? (this last bit was the worst, I'm a Dr of Psychology, I teach in a university mainly, you guessed it, social constructionism!).
I feel like I've gone back so far, I'm in so much pain and this guy is telling me it's all in my head.

Doctors with these irrelevant and outdated attitudes are still around unfortunately.  They are next to useless for CFS and very demoralising.  I know what it feels like to be treated like a nutcase when in pain.  You need to find a different doctor.  Don't waste even a minute on trying to change his mind, just leave. If you can, make sure your practice knows why you've rejected this doctor.  A real doctor (not one playing psychologist) works with you and understands you are partners in trying to get rid of the pain and other symptoms.  They do not assume the causes are psychological.  I know it won't be easy finding someone else, but it's essential.  Sorry you've experienced this.
