AMITRIPTOLINE

I am taking amitriptoline to help me sleep. The doc started me at 50 mg didn't help much. He now has me on 100 mg & it may help me 3 nights a week. Last night I took it at 9:45 went to bed at 10. Was still awake at 2:30 am. Feel to sleep woke up at 4:14 am then got out of bed at 6:30. I just can't sleep.
Does anyone have any suggestions for me.
Thanking you in advance,
Val

Hi Humminbyrd, Phtartist here,

I have FM for over 12 yrs now.  You are the first person I've heard talk about magnesium.  What does it do?

10 mg. amitriptyline had we sleep 12 hours and I was groggy until I took a nap the next day.   My question is, can the blue coated tablets be cut?  Maybe 5 mg. would work better for me.  My fibro pain was much less when I took it.

I am 61 and have had FMS since I was 45.  They put me on 50 mgs of amitriptoline to start.  We found that less not more helped me.  I was taking 30 mgs for the longest time and now I am taking 20 mgs.  We found that if I took more than 30 mgs it had an opposite reaction of "keeping me awake"!  So, you might try less.  I had them prescribe the meds in 10 mgs pills.  That way I could try different strengths to get the right one.  I have taken it for many, many years and found it to be a life saver.  I also take magnesium at bed time.  I take magnesium before breakfast and during the afternoon.  Take magnesium on an empty stomach: one hour before eating or two hours after eating.

I wish you all the best.

My doc told me it was old school for depression but is used for sleeping problems know. That is why he has me on those. He will probably have to switch me as I read the highest he can go is about 200mg. I know when I see him in July he will have to up them probably to 125mg & see if that helps. I can't believe that some of you only take 25mg & feel groggy. I have absolutely no groogy feeling what so ever. I had an operation about 10 years ago to get my left ovary out & the nurse said Val you didn't sleep last night you are going to have to take a sleeping pill tonight. I have had a problem with my sleep for years, but I have always pushed myself to do what I had to do. But in February I just couldn't push anymore. I will let you know if he ups the dose.

I was on that until we moved and my new Doc. said that med was old school.. So he put me on remron which works great!! Currently I am on serquel.
Others are pamelor (nortriptyline) , trazadone, ambien, which none of these worked for me. Hope this gives you some ideas.

I don't feel dizzy or foggy from the pills. I got vertigo at the beggining of May for about 5 days. But the dizzy & lightheaded feelings never went away. I only feel lightheaded when I look down or look up,or when I bend over. Feel dizzy when I lift my arms to wash my hair in the shower. I can't figure out why I can't sleep when I see other people saying they take 10-25 mg & I am taking 100mg.
