Carpul tunnel syndrome and high Ck levels

Carpul tunnel syndrome and high Ck levels

2Weeks ago i woke up with a lame hand, which later became very painful. I was diagnosed with carpul tunnel syndrome. I have never had a problem with my hand before. I am a rock climber. 4Days later I started experiencing irregular dull twitching pains in my muscles; biceps, triceps, upper back and legs. I had blood tests done which came back negative but showed Ck levels of 585. My GP says it is a virus and that CK levels has no relation with carpul tunnel syndrome. He suggested I should return in a week's time for another Ck count. I have done research and have been unable to find any relation between virusses and Ck levels. Please advise as to where I should go from here. My CTS has improved slightly, but i am experiencing pain during weight bearing movements. I am taking anti inflams. Any advise  will be welcome! i am very frustrated in this debilitating state.

Hi,
Creatine kinase (CK) is an enzyme found mainly in the heart, brain, and skeletal muscle. It may be raised after exertion, thyroid disease or there may be other nonpathological reasons of raised CK levels. High CK levels may be seen in patients who have: Heart attack ,Brain injury or stroke ,Inflammation of the heart muscle (myocarditis) ,Convulsions ,Delirium tremens ,Dermatomyositis or polymyositis ,Electric shock ,Lung tissue death (pulmonary infarction) ,Muscular dystrophies .Additional conditions may give positive test results: Hypothyroidism ,Hyperthyroidism ,Pericarditis following a heart attack ,Rhabdomyolysis . Highest elevations of CK are seen with conditions causing muscle fiber necrosis as in dystrophinopathies (e.g., Duchenne and Becker muscular dystrophy), rhabdomyolysis, malignant hyperthermia, neuroleptic malignant syndrome, and severe polymyositis. Most inflammatory myopathies (i.e., polymyositis, dermatomyositis) will have abnormal CK levels during the disease course, although the extent of CK level elevation can be quite variable.
The cause of elevated CK levels in your case could be a muscle disease since you have related symptoms . Your symptoms may not be due to Carpal tunnel syndrome but suggest of muscle disease .  Common screening tests for myopathy include serum CK and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) . If these screening blood tests are abnormal, further investigation should then proceed to EMG testing and possibly, to muscle biopsy as well as other tests (e.g., ischemic exercise testing and DNA evaluation). EMG and muscle biopsy are more invasive tests. Muscle biopsy is the most sensitive diagnostic test for myopathy . Please discuss these possibilities with your doctor and get the investigations done for muscle disease . Hope this helps you . Take care and regards !
