The supplements are quite expensive and alternative medications are not covered by insurance.  This is why it's more likely you will get a prescription drug than something alternative.  Health care needs to reform its policies so that all treatments are covered, esp. when it is proven that they work.

I don't believe that Dr. Teitlebaum is any more expensive than anyone elses protocol.  They are all expensive and what works for one person may not work for another.  I can't say yea or nay based on the principle that I can't afford the products.  That doesn't mean they do not work.  I am on another treatment and doing quite well.  It's likely that other CFS/FMS forums don't promote it because of its cost, not because it's a flawed treatment.

Unfortunately, until these illnesses are recognized for how severe they are by the govt., physicians and others, we must do what works for each of us individually and some have done well with Teitlebaum's protocols.

Hi and welcome to MedHelp ! I'm sorry to hear about your experience. I know of a woman who had a similiar experience with this clinic, but was treated successfully using antibiotics for mycoplasma infection. She now has a website, travels around the world and educates people on these illnesses.

So what treatment plan did they put you on at the center ?  I do know that Teitelbaum gives a lot of various treatment recommendations in his books and often has to revise his books because new information on these "syndromes" is coming out on the daily basis.

What I've learned is that fibro and CFS patients may have different needs. There was a woman on the Oprah show with fibromyalgia and Dr. Oz sent her over to Dr. Teitelbaum's clinic. They followed up with her only a month later and she told everyone that she was 80% better. I know that I'm on the right treatment plan because I'm getting better. Teitelbaum mentions mycoplasma infection is his latest book... and that is what I'm being treated for. Fortunately the treatment for my type of infection is inexpensive, but supplements and massage therapy are more expensive... but necessary for me.

I just discovered this website as I was interesting in finding comments regarding the Fibro and Fatigue center.  I dropped over $5000 to this place and that was my savings and basically what it came down to was that I was back at the same treatment I was using with my rheumatologist at the Cleveland Clinic and he was covered by my insurance!!!  I was thought it was a major rip off and I'm still realing from the loss of all that money.  Their treatment may work for some but it did absolutely nothing for me at all.  I would have been better off sticking my my doctor that was covered by insurance.  I think if these places truly want to help people like us, they better make it affordable!!!!!  I think it's highway robbery!

Good morning;
I've been reading up on Dr. T also, and I don't think that I would be able to do the Shine Protocol myself. I have been taking every supplement that my internist and Rheumy has given me faithfully for a year. My doses are all either doubled or tripled and to be quite honest I am so sick of taking a hand full of pills twice a day.

It takes me up to 30 minutes at a time now to get them all down. I don't feel any better in fact my condition has worsened. I've been told and I've read in several articles that Fibro is not progressive, but both of my doctors tell me that it is. I know that pain wise I hurt more and more. I can't say whether it is because my Fibro is getting worse or whether my medication isn't doing the job it did at first.

With that being said, I have to agree with Robinhood. Although we are comfortable, we are not independently wealthy, and I'm leery about something that promises that their product will work. I intend to keep reading and researching and talking to my Rheumy about supplement treatments.

gentle hugs
Angel

Looking around other CFS/FMS forums, it appears that not everybody's particularly enthusiastic about Dr. Teitelbaum.  Most of the threads I read indicated that while there were occasionally some mild improvements (such as you might get from better sleep hygiene and the like), they were generally few and far between, and in the mean time, the patients had all but bankrupted themselves lining the pockets of the supplement companies.  Personally, it makes me very VERY wary when I see a doctor prescribing supplements by the ton...I don't think I need to explain the concept of kickbacks, or people who are unscrupulous enough to leach off the ill.

As for the "How to Get Treated with No Money" article, I would think that if he were genuine about it, it would be published on the Internet.  Sadly, I can't find the text of it anywhere.  The only reference I've seen to it, like the one above, has it being handed out at a presentation by him.  Sounds incredibly fishy to me!  Where was this article published?  For that matter, has ANY of his work been published somewhere that's properly peer-reviewed?

All that said, I haven't tried the SHINE protocol, primarily due to the fact that I'm not independently wealthy and he seems to only present in the States, so I would never be able to attend his presentations to find out if he's as fishy as he seems.  If anyone has the money, though, and the patience to try it, or has opinions on one of his presentations, please let us know.

Yep... 3 years and he doesn't prescribe Lyrica either ! ; ^ )   He was on the Oprah Winfrey show once with Dr. OZ. They interviewed a woman he treated who had fibromyalgia and she said she felt great after doing Teitelbaum's protocol.

You are quite welcome.  I read through and found it to be very interesting.  I'm also going to print it out for my next office visit.  It seems to be a fairly simple protocol to follow for FMS and CFS.

3 yrs?  Wowwww...i'm quite impressed.  :-)

THANK YOU for finding and adding the link to Dr. Teitelbaum's SHINE protocol to our Health Pages !

For members who aren't familiar with Dr. Teitelbaum, he has battled CFS and fibromyalgia while he was attending medical school in the '70s. He also graduated from college in only 3 YEARS. He is one of the physicians that I listen to.
