Flare up

Hi there. What do I need to help ease a flare up? Over the last 3 days, I have been experiencing the worst flare up i have ever had. I am taking Lyrica and in the process of trying to get to a higher dose, however, i am in such severe pain, that i am getting ready to start taking hydrocodone because i cannot deal with the pain. i hurt everywhere. some of my muscles are spasming. Aside from laying around and doing nothing, which is not really am option for me, what can i do to help ease back?
thanks in advance,
jen

I've also been having a horrible flare-up and I also take Magnesium (helps with the muscle cramps) but I also take Tizidine for the muscle spasms, etc.  My regimine is Wellbutrin in the morning with a 50 mgs. of Savella and then around 1 p.m. I take a second Savella 50 mgs.  Before bed, I take a full dose of Magnesium, Tizidine.  I used hydrocodone for the break through pain.  And, to help me sleep my doctor put me on Ambien just this past Saturday and so far Saturday night and Sunday night slept better than ever!

Like everyone has mentioned the heating pad does wonders for me.  I even take it to work with me.

I truly hope you find some relief soon.  Even taking all these things I've been hurting more than I have in a long time.  However, I also have bone on bone from osteo arthritis in my right knee, arthritis in my left shoulder, bone spurs and the rotator cuff is pulling away from the collar bone.  It seems when it rains it pours!  It's no fun!!! Like someone said above, the weather really doesn't help either and it seems most parts of the country have had some form of weather pattern changes.

Good luck!  Hang in there as difficult as it can be!

**Gentle Hugs**

You'll be in my prayers!

I'm sorry to hear of your flare.  If your doctor has prescribed the hydrocodone, and you need it, then by all means, take it.  However, if you had it prescribed by either a different doctor or for some other reason (not the fibro pain), then defnitely be sure to check with them before doing so.

As you say you're having a lot of muscle spasms, I would also suggest, in addition to the heating pad and warm showers (I find that too hot is not helpful either, but that may just be me), that you ask your doc about possibly prescribing you a muscle relaxer.  I quite often find that I need both my pain med and the muscle relaxer to get any kind of relief.

Stay well hydrated and eat when you can.  If you're like me, when you're in a lot of pain, the last thing you really feel like doing is eating, but it's important to keep up your strength and nutrition, so do try to get something in.

It's also important to get as much rest as you can - I know, I know, much easier said than done when you're in pain - but honestly, the pain will only get worse if you're not getting rest.  So even if you have to lie down in the middle of the day for 1/2 hour, do it.

While some gentle stretching and moving around is good and will help you from getting too stiffened up, avoid anything overly strenuous.

Another thing that might help - if you have one particular area that is hurting more than others, say like your lower back, something like a BenGay rub may help a little.  BUT DO NOT USE THIS AND THEN USE THE HEATING PAD OR TAKE A HOT SHOWER!!!!  VERY VERY IMPORTANT!!!  Also, do not use the heating pad or take a hot shower right before putting the rub on.

I don't know what the weather is like in your part of TX right now, but here in VA it's cold and we had a dusting of snow this morning - and the combination of cold and dampness definitely make me hurt a lot worse.  Of course, unfortunately, there's no gettign away from Mother Nature!

I hope you get some relief soon.

I live with my heating pad as much as possible, and hot showers help for at least a short while after as well.  Good luck, and I hope your flare is over soon.

I add magnesium to my diet when I flare like that.  Also, if the hydrocodone helps, then use it until the flare improves. That will at least keep you moving.  I also try to do some gentle yoga stretches, and nothing strenuous.  Hang in there, it will get better.
