Doesn't really matter what type of viral infection.  Any of them can trigger CFS, and there are so many viruses out there that it's impossible to determine.  Mono (EVB) and HHV6 appear to have specific high rates of CFS triggering (around 10% in the studies I've seen).  The classic description of sudden-onset is "Several of my family members and I got a cold or virus or the flu or parasite infection.  Everyone else got well, and I just don't seem to be and it's been months or years now."

Those are symptoms of CFS.  Maybe instead of catching an STD, you could a virus, or mono.  A viral infection and mono especially, can be a trigger for CFS.  The cfids.org site for the cfids of america had good basic information as does the CDC's site (Centers for Disease Control, g'vt organization).  Take those to your doctor, and get tested for everything on it and anything else he suspects to rule out everything else.

Most people with sudden onset CFS get it worse at first and then slowly find things that help them.  So, start looking for treatments.  Such as keeping legs elevated, resting as needed and keeping exercise under the trigger point, taking not-hot showers, adjusting vitamin supplements.  Early on I noticed that around 70% of people I talked with had their greatest improvements from adjusting their diets.  It was all sorts of adjustments from leaving out a common allergy triggers like egg, dairy, wheat, corn, tomato, shellfish, nuts.  To special diets like macrobiotic or yeast elimination.  For me leaving out egg & dairy was huge and took months to fully see all the improvement.  (Took about 1 week to see some subtle shift).

I hope it turns out to be something easily treatable, but the best you can do is start the research and advocate for yourself.  All the best!
