I am almost positive that I have fibromyalgia. I was being treated by a family doctor several years ago and all of the symptoms of fibromyalgia were brought to the table and I have quite a few of them. Sore/lumpy spots in my ribs, fatigue, anxiety etc. The doc I was seeing at the time said that fibromyalgia was only a fancy name for a disease in which they could not identify anything wrong with you. I was furious because these sore places in my ribs are real. It hurts to be hugged to tightly. I KNOW this is not normal. Any advice on what type of doctor to see who actually believes that this is real pain and will help me? Does or does this not sound like fibromyalgia?
I think most docs deal with these symptoms as if we are either hypochondriacs or neurotic in some other way. I diagnosed myself after searching online about 5 years ago. I have definitely had this for at least 15 years. I was going through a terribly abusive marriage, which led to divorce and the stress of all that, pushed me further and further into pain. I definitely saw a causal link.
Oh, going back to diagnosis. I went online and found the 3-4 best list of symptoms going with fibro. I did a copy and paste and printed it off. Then I highlighted which ones I had. I learned about gabapentin, and printed off the Canadian and Euro use of it with fibro. SO, when I got to my appt. I gave him the first pages, saying, "This is what I have.". Then I gave him the second, saying, "This is what I need you to prescribe." He read it all, while sitting there, and agreed. He wrote that Dx down, and Rx'd the meds.
And that's my story and I'm sticking to it. LOL

most of us here were or are still waiting to be dx'd with fibro, or something.
i was see by many types of doc's who didn't have a clue on what was happening to me. my problems started in '98 however i wasn't dx'd until '00.
yeap! ten years of this painful mess...
it wasn't until '03 that i finally got a name to the pain by a ra.
i just recently started to have the pain in my rib cage, and mistook it for gas pains. i just happen to read somewhere that pain in the rib cage goes along with fibro.
if it's fibro, i can't say.
when you can, try and read past post they're filled with good info.
by the way, fibromyalgia means pain in the muscle, tendons so to hell! with him saying it's a fancy name.
many times i have to remind my babies/husband that i'm just to sensitive to be hugged right now. who in there right mind wants to see a hurt face! or scream out loud because somebody touched you and you weren't braced for it, who would do that?!
i know that my pain is real, and you sound like you know what's happening to you.
so try a schedule an appt. soon with a ra hopefully the one you get will be on the same page a you or even know where to send you for help.
keep on posting, it really does help...
