New to fibro, lots of question

I was diagnosed before Christmas with Fibromyalgia. I also have hashimoto's thyroiditis confirmed with a fine needle aspiration on my thyroid. I have had hashimoto's for 7 years. Anyway, back in Ocotober I had sinus congestion and vertigo. It was a holiday so the DR. concerned that it might be an infection called in a script for me, augmentin and told me to take zyrtec. One week later to the day I broke out in hives all over my body, head to toe, long story short it took cortisone shot, steroids, and zyrtec to clear me up. After 4- 5 days it was MUCH better, but for a few weeks after that I would still ge tthem here and there, nothing major. The Dr. eventually tested me for penicillin allergy through rast testing and it came back negative. Although from what i have read rast really is not a very sensitive test and therer can be false negatives.Along with the hives my neck was sore, and my face would get itchy and numb. Just wondered I guess if with fibro. people had more drug allergies or can have just one case of acute hives for no reason. Anyone with anything like this I would welcome info!!

Sorry...to answer your other question, yes you can have one case of severe hives and not have that reaction again or may have it react the same years later.

Most definitely.  Both FMS and CFS suffer from Multiple Chemical Sensitivities.  I break out with rashes frequently.  Sometimes it's just a nit here or there, and if I take pain meds. it will either make me ill or I will get hives.  They seem to subside as my body adjusts to the medication.  It's a 50-50 deal with these illnesses.  For every one who has an adverse reaction, there is another who has not, but may with a different type of medication.  We are all unique in this respect.  What is most important with any adverse reaction is if you feel short of breath, pressure in the chest, or your throat/tongue swell.  This can be quite serious and would require immediate medical attention.

Take care of yourself.

Hi and Welcome.

To answer ur question...yes, fibro patients can and do have sensitivities to meds. I recently found things I used to take I can no longer do so because of reactions. Not everyone will get a reaction and the types of reactions will vary as well.

I too have hashimoto's......and it's no help with the sinuses ......and for the vertigo....u can try non drowsey dramamine.....as long as ur system can take it.Otherwise, u may need antivert for prolonged vertigo....but more meds, mean more issues for me.

Good luck
Godspeed
