Severe Pain in upper Left side of upper back

I have recently been having a great deal of pain in my upper left part of my abdomen. When I went to the hospital they tested me for a kidney stone and found nothing.

My question is has anyone ever experience this type of situation. My dr feels it is just my fibro flaring up, but I just don't know if I believe that.

If anyone might be able to help me please post.

So sorry, I know your pain. I have been there....a 12 on a pain scale of 10. Horrible. I would try the Lyrica again. I hated it at first. I couldn't function I was so tired. I layed around and thought I would be a zombie my whole life. Luckily I stuck it out and the sides went away. I am not so tired, I am sleeping, I am not in pain and I am back in grad school and interested in what I am doing. This was not the case for close to two months. now I am am getting the benefit of the lyrica w/o the sides. If I miss a day of doses, I feel it! So I make sure I take it.  Give it a try again, and don't give up too soon. I almost did and I would have been in pain and nothing would have been happening in my life.

Hope you find some relief, it is awful without it!  Neurontin made me nutz and did help some, but the Lyrica seems to work better. I started very slowly...only 50mg a week for 3 weeks. It took time to get the pain relief, but I am glad I did it slowly so I could measure how much I needed.

Good luck and let us know!

Well I landed in the ER tonight due to increase in pain. The ER dr explained what I am experiencing is my muscles in the chest wall are spastic. Yes it is due to the fibro. What else can go wrong. I do live in the snow belt in Pa, and I am praying that things calm down after winter is over.

I appreciate everyones advice. Yes I have tried lyrica. wasn't thrilled with it. I have been on Neurontin for awhile but damn that isn't working either. I may try the lyrica again with my drs. permission of course.

I never thought about the shingles or  attack. I go back to the dr on Tues I will ask him about that when I go on Tues.  Trust me it is not going away, but is getting worse. My dr is in on fri again, so I will call him then. He really feels it is just my fibro, but I will be honest I'm not sure anymore.

When I went to the hospital, they did do a CAT scan of my kidneys and found nothing. They also did a urine test and it was negative. They also did an internal, but I haven't heard the results are yet. Yes I do have severe constipation and damn it is really bad.

I haven't had a good nights sleep for the past 2 weeks due to the pain. Damn I don't know what to do anymore.

Please if anyone has any advice, post me SOON

hey barb925,
yes! i'm going thru something very simular to you.
the pain is in my upper left quadrant, between my rib cage and and back. i tend to get relief when i bend over on my side, or place a pillow under me when laying down.

2 wks ago they thought it was a kidney infection, the dr. gave me uhmmmm...
well i can't recall the name right now, but he treated it as a kidney infection. i just had a cat-scan, upper and lower xray this past friday 26th.
(it was a 10 pill, for 10 days) the pain stopped for a while/few days, until about  2 days ago.

my urine sample showed me to be losing losts of white blood cells ? i'm not sure yet what that means. i should have my blood work results soon.

*does your urine smell like ammonia?
mine did, almost caustic, it smelt like that foul urine right before a yeast infection.
even though I drink gallons of water because of all the meds i take.  (i'm affriad of getting a kidney, liver etc. infection).

oh, my back is very itchy in one spot, the lower left side. my kids had to use a boar bristle brush for me to get some satisfaction.

around the time it started;
i had no appetite.
when i did eat, i would gag or simply throw up.
i was wetting the bed alot more.
slight vaginal itching/irritation.
servere constipation.

*sorry that's all i can remember.

i've had fibro since '98, dx'd in '00 and i have never had this problem before. this just didn't seem to be directly associated with fms.

i must apologize to you, i really wanted to post you when i first saw your question but i was just to sick to reply.

okay i got a sleep wave coming, so i going to take advantage of it. LOL
and i will keep you posted...

Sleep well, i know how you're feeling

Hi,
Did you ever find out what's causing the pain in the upper left side?  I have the same thing!  My fibro doc said that it may be a shingles or zoster attack.  It causes pain in the band area of the body and people who had chicken pox as a child are prone to an attack.  He gave me Neurontin and I got better.  But, lately, I've been having more pain and beginning to wonder if it's something else.  If you find out anything, let me know.

Are you on any meds for FM? I would see another rhemy, but maybe your PCP can prescribe Lyrica or one of the other nerve pain drugs.

OOPs  I thought you meant reumatoid arthritis.  I was recently at one a couple of months ago, however she really just kinda poo pooed me and sent me on my way. I plan on seeking another one out, but they are definitely not a commodity in this area.

At present I have not been tested for remy. But, I am sure within time he may decide to send me back to a rheumatologist.

If you already have FM you know that the pain can hit anywhere, anytime. I haven't had left stomach problems, but have had right side. It comes and goes. Ultrasounds show nothing. All I know is I have stabbing pain in strange areas from time to time and I don't have the time to even think it can be anything other than FM at this point. Of course there can be things like kidney stones....I would check that out, not sure what else is on the left side.  Do you have a rhemy?
