Hey whats up.. I am 22y.o. and just originally got diagnosed wit FM at 16 but I didn't believe it. Now I just recently got a second opinion at the beginning of this year.. I believe it is possible for a traumatic experience to onset this condition.. I was in a terrible accident when I was about 10 then my parents fought alot.. I was going thru a lupus diagnosis, At 16 I fell at my job and hit my back. The fibro pain is worse in my back.. I fell when I was pregnant with my second son.. Geesh. The list can go on and on about possibilities that may have caused my FM/CFS.. I truly don't understand the syndrome but I'm reading up on it alot. Make sure you can get a good doc's opinion b/c FM is almost always misdiagnosed. There is almost always another underlying problem somewhere.

Absolutely yes!  Fibromyalgia can be caused by physical trauma and/or emotional trauma...

Also, my Rheumatologist explained to me that Fibromyalgia often times, more times than not... is an underlining condition of another medical condition such as Rheumatoid Arthritis and other auto-immune disease(s).  I have RA and an auto-immune disease Hashimoto's Thyroiditis - which is when ones immune system goes crazy, anti-bodies get confused with the wrong message and they begins distroying instead of protecting.

And my Endoconologist also explained to me that Fibromyalgia is  often an underling condition of an under active thyroid too. Research reports that up to 70% of patients with Fibro also have an underlining thyroid problem.

I personally have had physical trama and excessive emotional trama.
Was diagnosed with Fibromyalgia and Myofacail Pain Syndrome first and then various other tests were ran, then other disorders and diseases were later discovered.

Hope this info helps;  Sonflower

I myself was diagnosed with fibro after I had surgery on my neck.
I have read that 29% of patients with secondary fibro have suffered trauma to the cervical spine.
I know what you are saying about being fit and healthy before, my life has changed so much since my surgery.  I love my neurosurgeon, the surgery fixed the pain and numbness in my arm, but since then my neck and shoulders, well pretty much my whole body hurts all the time.
Hang in there, it has to get better!!

I can recall going through long-term, high-anxiety stressors prior to mine flaring-up.  As a youth, I had no severe injuries...no broken bones or anything like that.  However, when I was in my 20's I was also involved in an accident and had whiplash, as well as an egg on my head.  My symptoms seemed to worsen after that incident.

I've wondered the same thing.
I was rear ended by drunk drivers and had whiplash all on my right side and that's where the fibro symptoms seemed to be the worst.  Two months after that accident there was an electrical short when I put hight beams on in the country and all the lights went out, as quick as I was shutting the lights off and back on, it was too late to realize I was about to fly off the end of that road and 15ft down to a corn field.   After that it was hard to know what was the accident and what might be something else. ( I'm almost 2" shorter now...lol)
As VaBreeze noted in her post there are some theories about a virus and traumatic events, I'm sure I'm not the only one who went through all the possible causes so, who knows.....lol

Hi there -

No one knows what causes fibro, but it is thought that it can be induced after physical or emotional trauma.  You didn't mention what type of back injury you had, but if it was serious then I would say yes, that may be what set it off.   There are others who recall being sick with a virus, and then go on to develop fms or cfs.

Most of us can recall a time when we were pretty healthy before one of these illnesses hit.  If it is true fibro, you are going to have times when you feel ok and others where you are flaring and can't do anything.  One of the most important things we learn is to pace ourselves because we just don't have the ability to do things we did before.

I'm sorry that you got this dx, but everyone here can empathize with what you are feeling about it.  If you have any questions at all, this is the place for you.  We are here to help in any way possible.  We understand how difficult this can be.

Take care of yourself.
