skate scooter as mobility aid

skate scooter as mobility aid

i got a skate scooter for myself about a year ago, by the way. i use it to get around, helps me walk (and wince) less. just wanting to share some stuff i've learned about them, in case it was relevant to anyone.

it was $160. i got the one with the SLIGHTLY BIGGER front WHEEL [4"]; rides better. there's one with a bigger wheel again, which would've also been good [diameter 6"]

it has padding on the handle - recommended. (the kiddy ones don't, and also have a rough-riding small wheel.)

i often use it as a 'walking stick' - this is great cause it just rolls along on the wheels, without needing to lift it with every step. this also saves on impact on hands. this has been fantastic cause over the years i've lost a lot of arm strength - from lack of use - it helps keep arms in use. so it saves on strain on legs. also doubles as a bit of a seat if you like  :)  i couple of kids have also said 'nice scootah' - so i feel like i'm in with the under 15's.

don't ride in the rain or on wet surfaces - bad idea.

closed shoes are better than bare feet - really hurts to accidentally kick it...

get it maintenance checked whenever you can. keep the wheels on and in a straight line!

anyway - i love it - it has added to my quality of life - we could all do with that. i even put it in the car in case i have to scooter from where i'm parked to where i need to go. i feel better about going out or up the street cause it helps me with stability and i can lean on it any time. it's a swiss one called 'micro'.

doesn't take up much space and is lightweight. too small to ever get it motorised. it can fold up even smaller if needed. i have flipped it once and happy to report that i bounced and just took some skin off my hand.

I tried one once before the FMS.  All I managed to do is fall face first.

What a great idea - if, unlike poor FurballsMom, you've still got a good sense of balance!

I often borrow my kids' scooters just for the exhilaration of moving at speed with little effort. I hadn't thought of looking for an adult version. What a great way to walk the dog. If only she weighed a bit more than 10 pounds, she could pull me along!
Better get me a Husky...

Happy Scootering, "acker"!
