Custom orthotics caused sharp pains behind knee and upper calf

Beginning of January I got new custom orthotics. I noticed my right one really hurt the middle of my foot. I continued wearing it anyways as I thought it just took time to adjust. Since then I have had SHARP pains in my upper calf and behind my knee. I have discontinued using the orthotics for over a week now with no improvement. I can get the pains anytime, usually walking and when leg is extended fully or just when i'm not careful. I saw acupunture once for it and it helped for about a day. At first there was a small bubble it seemed behind the knee but after my acupunture treatment it went away. My doctor really didn't do much. He just gave me a prescription for some anti-imflamitory. I am scared to exercise it or stretch it as I don't want to do further harm. I have been wearing a tensor the last few weeks which helps quite a bit. The doctor says to use ICE, which I was for a while. Then acupunture told me to use HEAT. What do I use for this case? What could the problem be? One more thing if it helps, yesterday I kicked a big rock in the mid-foot where the original orthotic pain was and that triggered the sharp pain up my calf. And today I was able to press on a point behind my knee which triggered the pain too.  Very strange and annoying problem. Any ideas or treatment would be appreciated.

ice helps inflammation.  heat helps sore muscles.
sometimes, pain behind the knee can present as a baker's cyst.
if you have hard orthotics, perhaps have them remade with a semiflexible material.  the switch can help.
have the posterior knee checked again and perhaps recommend an ultrasound or mri to assess what is causing the posterior knee pain.
orthotics usually do not cause posterior knee pain.
