Hallux Rigidus

I am a 48 year old female and I've been diagnosed with Hallux Rigidus on my left hand big toe.  Am currently on Cortisone injections for pain relief but this only temperarly relieves the pain.  My Orthopadic Surgeon has suggested the following the following types of surgery to correct my painful condition.  My first option is for a clean out of the joint or a Cheilectomy.  This may help keep me going for a few years but is not guaranteed to cure the problem.  My second option is for a more permanent solution  being an Arthrodesis or Fusion.  At this point I am considering having the Fusion surgery.  My question is how sucessful is this form of surgery?  Is there any possibilty that after having  the surgery performed that my condition will worsen?  Is there anything that I should be made aware of regarding this type of surgery?  Will it effect my gait and will i be able to walk normally again?
Thanking you in advance for your reply.

if the joint is bad, get the fusion.  if done correctly, patients do quite well.  you can still walk, run, etc.  however, you will not be able to wear high heels or go up on your toes well b/c it will be fused.  usually, it is fused at 10 degrees up from the ground to allow for normal walking
