Strange feeling between toes in my toddler

My 3 yr old boy's been complaining about strange feeling between his toes for a quite a while now.  Last year when he couldn't really talk, I assumed it was "pain" sensation and asked his pediatrician and was told sometimes after a physically intense day it could happen and it wasn't anything to worry about.  Now he's 3, he's able to tell me it isn't itchy, it isn't pain, it just feels like something weird between his toes.  He wanted me to put something between his toes like tissues or sticks and even with that it doesn't help.  It isn't everyday but it is frequent enough it worries me and he even wakes up crying middle of the night banging his feet on his bed and rubbing them against the mattress or floor.   I've googled and found there are quite a number of ppl with similar symptom but no cause or a solution.  Does anybody out there have an answer for this please?  it's driving both me and my boy crazy..   His doctor didn't think much of it and said it could be growing pain.. I don't think it is.. Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

is there a lump there?  do the toes cross over?
what do the toes look like when he stands? are they normal or do they curl under or over each other.
if everything looks benign and he still complains, get an MRI of the foot.  this will tell you if there is a soft tissue tumor growing inside.  xrays can help to see if there is abnormalty at the bone level that may be causing the discomfort.
if all turns out normal, then at least you can be relieved when he complains.  do as he wishes, put a cotton roll b/w the toes to provide relief.
