Swollen toe and tibial sesamoid

Swollen toe and tibial sesamoid

I saw a foot doctor about six months ago with a swollen large toe. It was somewhat painful, more so when pressure was applied or when I tried to wear heals. Unfortunately the x-rays they took showed very little - other bones were in the way he said. He thought I might have an inflamed or possibly fractured tibial sesamoid. He made a special insole for my shoe and gave me some anti-inflammatory pills. It seemed to be a temporary fix and the swelling has gone down some, but not completely. It is still larger than my other big toe and does not bend as it should. Could something else be wrong?

ask your doctor if he could get another x-ray to see if there are any changes to the sesamoid.  also, getting bilateral foot views can help determine if there is a fracture when comparing the films in question.  also, an MRI scan would show you any soft tissue damage.
usually, a plantar plate (which lies beneath the sesamoids) tear or injury prevents the toe from bending.  also, a sesamoid fracture could also limit toe bending.
you should get blood work to check for uric acid to rule out gout (which is most likely not the case)
