4 years ago out of the blue i couldn't put my left shoe on. the top of my left foot burns when the tongue of a shoe sits on it, but i can wear a pair of socks. my toes stay cold all the time, they get to the point where they hurt and make my leg hurt. it is worst on the left side, i think i put more weight on that leg. my ankles also swell. please just ry to give me a name to it. thanks.

i would get checked by a neurologist for nerve compression.
it sounds like you have neuritis to the dorsal nerves on the foot.  i also recommend getting checked by a vascular surgeon to assess the blood flow in your legs.
