Hello,
My sister has been suffering from swollen legs for the last 9 years. It started when she was 10, and we have tried everything possible: massages, acupuncture, special socks, drinking lots of fluids, contrasting showers, putting feet up, no hills naturally, but nothing seems to help. It was mainly her right foot that swells, but recently, her left foot started to swell very fast, and the swelling does not go away. Moreover, she started feeling pain in her feet/legs when walking fast. Does this mean her condition worsens? What is the worst scenario that could happen? We visited all doctors in our neighborhood, they all think it is lymph-related, but none of the prescribed remedies helped. The only exception is the sock that she wears everyday - it does not bring the foot into the normal conditions, but it prevents it from swelling enormously, although what I see is actually enormous to me - her side bones on the feet are not visible because of the swelling. I would very much appreciate your response.
you have edema. this can occur when the valves in the veins are not competant and do not close. they leak fluid downards (to the feet). other medical conditions that can cause swollen feet are congestive heart failure and lung disease.
i would get a physical from your pcp to rule this out.
if it is simply edema, wearing a compression stocking with 30 mmHG of pressure will help this. you can purchase these online or in drug stores.
