15 mo old: Is it malabsorption?

by the2bobs, Feb 19, 2009 12:14PM
My 15 mo old has been seeing a GI Ped since he was 4 mos old.  He was diagnosed with GERD and chronic esophagitis after an upper GI and endoscopy.  The GERD has disappeared but he remains on Prilosec for the esophagitis.

We began taking him to the GI Ped b/c he was constantly spitting up significant quanities.  He always had loose stools/diarrhea.  He was put on Neocate which really helped.  He stayed on Neocate until he was 11 mos old when he refused to drink it any longer.  We decided to try soy formula which he appeared to tolerate.  At 12 mos we transitioned him to soy milk.  He has been on soy milk for the past 3 1/2 mos.  For the last 6 wks he has been experiencing loose stools/diarrhea again.  He is already on a very restrictive diet--no dairy & wheat b/c he gets ezcema (eczema) and loose stools when he eats these.  He's anaphylactic to eggs, and I haven't had him tested for nuts or shellfish so we stay away from these.  We thought he was doing great on soy until recently and the GI Ped just keeps writing Rx for Prilosec and wants him back on Neocate Junior.  Of course, he won't drink the Neocate now.

I'm wondering if this is a malabsorption issue?  It has never been mentioned but as he is not allergic to dairy and wheat (endoscopy ruled he is not lactose intolerant and doesn't have Celiac's disease).  He is not gaining weight, either.  He will have a distended stomach for 3 hrs after drinking 8 oz of milk.  The GI Ped noticed this at his last visit but blew it off.  Also, you can still hear the milk in his stomach, it sounds like a full jug of water in there--for several hours.

I'm ready to call the GI Ped and request some investigation into this but not sure where they will start and what the treatment is?  They seem eager to send us to another allergist but I'm thinking this is a GI issue, not an allergy.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi..as I read this I thought celiac's...and then u said he was tested and it is not......can u get him to drink pedialite? to replace electrolytes after he has the runs.It is also made in frozen ice pops too!!

At his age it might be easier on him if u do the elimination diet.....keep a journal...he may be allergic to something else and is causing the stomach issues. It may be a combo of something he is eating or exposed to.....in the journal track what he eats, his bowel and type of bowel..passing of his water,if he had a bath and type of soap...ect

See if there is a pattern....I did this for my DD yrs ago and found she had an allergy to red food color which was in her meds  we gave for teething...she got hives and very iritable....

Good luck
