Acid Reflux after Total Gastrectomy?

by chossn, Sep 22, 2009 02:18PM
My father had total gastrectomy in 2003 for stomach cancer.  He's recently been having chronic throat discomfort/pain.  He's trying to find an ENT who takes medicare/medical.  In the meantime, he's only seen general family doctors.  They all have different theories, mostly acid reflux.  Can you have acid reflux if you don't have a stomach?  If so, they tell him to take antacid.  But if he is producing some acid, would it be harmful to get rid of what little acid he does produce?  Does he not need it for aiding digestion?  Any help would be appreciated.  Thank you.

Hi,
If he has had total gastrectomy acid reflux is unlikely.
If reflux is still present it could be bile reflux.
Discuss with his doctor regarding this possibility.
