Acid Reflux and Flax Oil

by hsum4, Apr 08, 2009 09:28PM
I was on Flax oil 2 Tablespoons per day for dry eye and to prevent macular degeneration after cataract surgery.  Now I have acid reflux.  I have since quit the liquid flax oil and switched to powdered flax meal.  I currently have another attack of the acid reflux.  My Ear, Nose and Throat doctor suggested I see a gastroenterologist.

If the oil was the primary cause the the acid reflux ( I took it for 4 months) will the reflux go away if I cut out the aggravating foods?  I stopped these foods for 2 months and I still have the reflux.  I'm taking Prisolex at the advice of my doctor.

HI and welcome to the forum.

I do not like to assume, but by Flax oil do u mean Flax Sed Oil...if so it is not the source of ur acid reflux...in fact it is a suggested oil to use on salads to help clam the irritated hiatal hernia and esphopagus.

Did ur dr so ne tests to see what the root cause of ur acid was? Was it a GI dr?

Along with the meds, lifestyle changes like avoiding certain foods and not eating prior to lying down...ect will help.

It is quite possible u have a hiatal hernia and should get tested to rule that out.

keep us posted

Dear selmaS:

I was taking flax seed oil.  I started getting this problem after taking the oil for several months.  I may be allergic to it.

I'm awaiting my gastroenterologist's appointment for further tests and I will mention the hiatal hernia.

Thank you

U r welcome...this is y it is best to keep a journal of what effects us as individuals...the standard list will not always "fit" everyone.

It could very well be that u had an issue that the flax seed oil adgitated.

Let us know hoe ur dr visit goes.

Thank you selmaS  I will try to get back to you as my appointment isn't for another month.  The doctors here are very busy and I will have to see a Physician's Assistant even so.
