Acid Reflux

by peteb11, Jan 01, 2008 03:49PM
Hi

I am a 24 year old male and about a year ago i had about two weeks of severe acid reflux and it was that bad that when i swallowed food it was so painfull as it past down my oesophagus, i went to the doctors and he gave me lanzoprazol which i took for about to weeks because he said it would give my oesophagus time to heal and stop the acid. That was all fine and i was back to normal with no hearburn or symptoms or medication and thought nothing of it. then about 7 months later i started to get acid reflux again daily so i went to the doctor and told him of the problem i had so he put me on lanzoprazol again 30mg daily which stoped my acid reflux and symptoms and ive been on 30mg a day for the last 7 months which keeps my symptoms at bay. but if i miss a dose my symptoms will return within days. My main concern is is it ok to take these tablets daily for long periods of time? and also why did i suddenly start getting acid reflux? Also i have heard of barrets oesophagus and the effects of long term acid reflux. Please could you tell me if what i have previously been through warrants further investigation? and any other advice? i always eaten a reasonable diet and itsnever changed in the last 10 years also im not over weight and i try to excercise. I also have been taking Mirtazapine for about 2 years for depression and havesufferd from anxiety and stress over the last couple of years, your feedback would be helpfull.

Hi peteb11,
If symptoms of GERD persist inspite of PPI then consider doing -
24/48 hours pH monitoring for confirmation of diagnosis.
If acid reflux is confirmed and there is no relief , the last resort is surgery.
Barrets can occur after long standing GERD.
Discuss with your physician regarding these issues.

I to have suffered from the acid reflux. When it finally comes down to finding out what really causes this no one will beleave there eyes. Most of our foods are man made and this means allot of poisions going into our systems. Take away the poisions and take away our problems. And as far and the meds you are on read some of the side affects from long term use. They are worse than the acid reflux. And your anxiety and depression could be caused from all the stuff they are giving us for drugs and the **** in our foods. Try changing to natural foods and health foods stores. You may see a difference or chinese cures. Drink more water to and flush your system. Good luck.
