Acid Reflux

I have had acid reflux for quite sometime. I burn so bad sometimes i cant stand it myself so I grab a tums which helps immediately...but my question is when i eat something that has salt in it burns me it seems on the top of my stomach. One nite i was woke up out of my sleep with this liquid running out of my nose and this burning in my throat i was chocking. When i got myself together the burning feeling was still in my throat i drank some water to try and take away the taste but it was still there.....I hate i have this,  if anyone else shares the same or knows what it is that i can do please inform to. Thanks..Hope to hear from someone soon.

Alcohol lowers the sphincter pressure, reduces the acid clearance and impair other protective functions.
This produces the various symptoms of GERD.

is GERD caused by the sphincter being too relaxed? I have exactly the same problem as the above guy. Alcohol makes it worse. Taking pepcid2 brings relief. why is the sphincter relaxed? wouldnt all ur food and acid come up all the time?

You are not taking medication for osteoporosis by any chance are you?

Thats how I was from taking fosamax for just 6 weeks.  It took quite a few weeks after I stopped taking it for the symptoms to go away.  Just curious.  The doctor here is no doubt right of course. :) Let me know how you are doing.

You are suffering from severe GERD.

For confirmation -
1. Upper GI endoscopy
2. 24 hours pH monitoring

For relief of symptoms -
1.PPI twice a day immediately before meals for 4-8 weeks
2. Life style modifications.

Life style modifications -
1. Head elevation while sleeping
2. Small frequent meals
3. Going to bed 2- 3 hours after food
4. Avoiding bed time snacks
5. Avoiding smoking and alcohol
6. Avoiding tight fitting clothes
7. Avoiding cola, citrus drinks, carbonated drinks, tea, coffee, spicy food
8. Weight reduction
