Acid reflux

by Cookiejm, Sep 12, 2009 10:32PM
Has anyone ever had constant coughing with acid reflux?  I have had this constant cough for 3 years and I was just diagnosed with acid reflux and non acid reflux and asthma.  I have no heartburn at all but I do have hoarseness.

cookiejm,
my wife has had a constant cough, wheezing and barks at night with GERD. she has had it for years, due to the fact that the gp diagnosed her problem as asthma!
she complains of burning in her neck throat and chest, but the cough is the worst problem for her as it has cracked ribs in the past and causes back ache.
A dr told us that the acid flows into the lungs which burns the lining and causes coughing fits, which can cause asthma like problems as the lungs become damaged.

HI and welcome to the GERD forum.

Not being a dr I can not say for certain what might be going on, BUT, I do know it is possible to have post nasal drip which can cause the GERD....

Try a saline nasal spray and avoid dairy at night and elevate the head of ur bed...see if that may help and report all symptoms to ur dr at next visit.

Good luck

Yes, it *is* definitely possible. There is something called silent acid reflux, where you have reflux but don't feel any  heartburn symptoms. For the first year I had acid reflux, this is what I had, and my only symptom was a persistent cough that never went away, plus a propensity for getting bronchitis with high frequency. When my reflux is bad, the acid gets into my lungs and causes me to cough. If it's particularly bad it seems it will also damage my lungs, which is why when my reflux wasn't under control I got bronchitis so much [this last correlation is not medically proven except in infants, but it's nearly 100% correlation in my own experience]. Does raising the head of your bed at night 6-8 in help you at all?
