An Array of Symptoms & Potential Answers

About 10 months ago, I experienced a bout of cramping throughout my abdomen which shot around my back. A friend dragged me to emergency: blood-work, urine test and pelvic ultrasound turned up nothing.

The cramping re-occurred off and on with the addition of bloating, gas, mucous in stool and ranging abdominal pain. I missed a lot of commitments when the pain levels got too high. A barium test showed a pre-ulcerous duodenum, hiatus hernia and reflux up to my clavicle. However, treatment with Zantec and Pantalone didn't seemed to help.

My GP then sent me to my gastrointestinologist who said the previous test results didn't matter and I had IBS (the same diagnosis he gave me 6 years ago). He prescribed a high-fibre/low gas producing diet which was close to the one I already followed.

On my second visit to him, 6 months later, I complained that constant pain was now concentrated under my rib-cage and things were coming up more. Also, a band of pressure had formed around my ribcage that made it hard to breath. He said I was having panic attacks and prescribed Motillion. I thought it simply the tension/pain that made it difficult to take full breaths. The Mottilion seems to make me feel more nauseous and to increase the "hiccups" & regurgitation.

Now, the pain and pressure around my ribcage can get so bad that I have to cancel things and lie down (sometimes for most of the day). Wrapping a scarf around my ribcage helps. Trigger point work done by my physiotherapist seems to bring some relief. She and my massage therapist are alarmed and confused by the difficulty they are having getting my abdomen to release. My physio is afraid that I've had a back injury.

Newest symptom: feeling like I might pass out (especially when squatting and rising) & my hands going numb.

My major question is, could we be missing something? Are there perhaps two or three things going on? And, what should my next steps be?

Thank you kindly.
