It does depend on the cause of GERD. It's important to prevent it as much as you can: control weight; limit alcohol, chocolate, mint, tomato sauce, spicy foods; eat small meals; don't eat at night; don't bend over after eating; elevate the head of your bed, don't wear restrictive clothing around the middle.
In addition, apples seem to help some people (just eat a few pieces throughout the day), and bicarbonate of soda helps when you have heartburn but you have to watch the salt content and not overdo it.
