Bad case of GERD and or something else

by mersilkee, Oct 09, 2009 04:43PM
Hi,
I have had GERD for many years and I have a hiatal hernia.  My doctor gave me some medication I don't remember the name of it right now, I think it is Protonics?  It is a pump inhibiter?  My husband is asleep right now and he takes care of my meds because I have another serious illness.  Anyway, the medicine helped somewhat.  I can eat cooked vegetables without much problem.  I am still afraid to eat meat.  In the past, it had gotten to the point where if I ate meat, many times I would feel tightening in my esophagus, then I would have prolonged vomiting for up to 12 hours.

I also have abdominal migraines and Celiac Sprue.  My migraine medication does not work for these episodes and my Celiac is controlled with a strict diet.

I have a fatal degnerative brain disease and my doctor told me sometimes it could effect swallowing so he ordered a swallowing study which showed some aspiration but it didn't explain the above symptoms.

I use to work in the medical field and reviewed several medical records of people who had complications after their surgery to repair the hiatal hernia.  Many doctors have advised me against surgery.

I'm not sure what to do now.  When I wake up in the morning, I always have the taste of vomit in my mouth and my throat is burning from the acid so I take Maalox.  I also have acid and burning during the day and I take Maalox.

So I am going back to my PCP and I suppose he will do more studies possibly and EGD.  I've had one before.

I was just wondering if anyone has had the same problems and what kind of treatment was successful.

Hi...sorry u sound like u have ur hands full of medical issues.U also sound like u understand alot that is going on with u medically.

May I ask, do u have the head of ur bed elevated?...this can help dramatically with keeping the acid from getting into ur esophagus....also avoiding dairy products in the evening and eating 3 to 4 hrs prior to lying down.

The Health Pages here on MH do have lists of foods and tips on lifestyle changes that can aid meds in helping with this issue.

U may also want to look at side effects of meds u r on for ur celiacs or nething else u may be on as reflux can be triggered by meds.

Also, I am not sure what meds u r on now for ur reflux...if PPI's didn't work ask for HII.....
