Most of the time, because I am careful with my diet, I don't need to use the PPI medications.  On occasion, I do use them.  I just know they aren't good as a long-term solution.  Especially the younger one is and how many more years of life is ahead for the person.  There are definitely concerns for nutitional deficiencies caused by malabsorption from long-term use, and I do know someone who took one long-term twice a day.  It messed up the lining to her intestines and created new and worse problems for her health.

So, now, I am super careful with my diet, staying away from foods I know to be problems for me.  As I do have environmental allergies, too, I do have to take antihistamines, too.  I learned from a friend that the antihistamines do actually help with GERD.  I even do my best not to take the antihistamines, because the body can develop a tolerance to them and they stop working.  So, its definitely a good thing to take breaks from these, too.  However, I noticed that what my friend learned by pure chance and internet research is true.  The antihistamines do help if one already needs to use the antihistamines anyway.  Anyway, antihistamines do seem to be the lesser of two evils concerning the pharmaceuticals.

The biggest and most important thing to do is stay away from the foods that you know are going to cause you trouble.

I'd suggest staying on your medications, taking them as prescribed, as well as starting a diet to control GERD.   Causes of poor digestion are very complex. Selma is on the money about keeping a journal.  Your exercise regimen, weight, foods, meds all play a role.

I'm an old man, but at age eighteen it was determined I had problems with tomato-based foods.  Whenever I ate high acid foods, I just took an antacid before those kind of foods, and it worked well for many years.  PPI's worked wonders, until I had a physical condition that no antacid or product like that would help and was surgically cured.  It's a matter of control, and also recognizing triggers.  A combination of tight diet and good medications is a common sense method of controlling GERD in my opinion.  I wouldn't go entirely one way or the other, use both and common sense.  Keep us informed.

Hi this is the same info as what I gave u the link for...mayb a little more detailed in the foods to avoid and foods that are safe lists, but since we r all diff u have to keep the journal and see if all the foods on the safe list r really safe for u....not all of them may b....and the same goes for the foods on the to avoid list...there may be some u can eat safely but most u really should just avoid so I would not experiment too much...but to eat spaghetti  once in a while will not be terrible for u...just not all the time.
