GERD (ACID REFLUX) EXPERT FORUM
Clues.

Clues.

A few years ago, I went to Ecuador to study biology in the Galapagos islands.  While I was there I came down with Giardia, which causes symptoms very similar to those shown by people with GERD.  I had the eggy burps, stomach pains and diarreah (diarrhea).  Recently, my sister also has contracted these symptoms but for a short period of time.  I also read somewhere that Giardia inhibits the body from releasing the bile that neutralizes fatty acids in the intestine.  Either this, or the bile is released and the pyloris valve may not let it through.  This is just an idea of mine of course, probably wrong, seeing as I have little knowledge of these things.  Still, if the acidic fats are not broken down in the intestine, they will come out the way they came in... resulting in undigested fat diarreah (diarrhea) (a smelly concoction) and stomach cramps.  Again, when fats go into the stomach, the gallbladder is what releases the bile to neutralize the fats in the intestine... if the gallbladder is removed, it would be very similar to having Giardia, but with permanant symptoms.  So, if certain foods containing fatty acids cause the pyloris valve to shut because they would otherwise be unable to be broken down by bile in the intestine, they would stay in the stomach and be broken down by the acid in there... causing a gas to be given off that would smell like eggs.

So, if this is true... this would explain why foods such as seafood, with high fatty acid content would trigger the problem.  To solve the problem, one would need something with the same neutralizing effects as the cholesystokinin found in bile, which also causes the pancreas to create certain enzymes that break down the fats.

I'll think about it some more, I'm a University student in Canada doing pre-med, so I have resources such as the Universities online medical journals.  I wouldn't mind helping anyone with any specific ideas they might have, since I would enjoy having something to research.
