Hiatal hernia causes symptoms similar to GERD. It's hard to distinguish it by symptoms alone. You would need a picture to know for sure--CT scan, MRI, or endoscope. Diet can help both--smaller meals, no late night eating, no alcohol, no spicy or real acidic foods. Usually, other than dealing with the symptoms, hiatal hernia causes no problems except in some rare cases. If your problems persist, and endoscope will tell you what you need to know. Keep in mind that it can take several weeks of nightly medication (acid reducers) for the esophagus to heal and symptoms to lessen. It's not an immediate improvement usually.
Well weight as of now is at an all time low (108) and it's still not getting better. I'm on day one of attempting a new diet and method and I'm hoping it's effective. If it was a Hiatal hernia though, I would imagine I would have some idea correct? Or does it go unnoticed.
Yes, pregnancy can cause GERD, often it's temporary caused by added pressure on the esophagus and stomach. A hiatal hernia also can cause GERD. As the weight drops it usually improves, but you might need some help with some PPI's (proton pump inhibitors) which cut down on stomach acid. The irritation already caused to the esophagus can cause your added symptoms of nausea. You might try some OTC acid reducers like Prilosec or the generic omeprazole. You should call your doctor and make sure it's okay to try, particularly if you are nursing your baby.
