Extreme fussiness and spitting up

My grandson is now 4 months old.  At 6 weeks - in June - he had pyloric stenosis surgery and double hernia surgery  After 1 month in the hospital he came home in July.  He is now on Neocate formula with Simply Thick added.  He takes Prevacid and Bethanicol and Maalox.  The GI dr had added rice cereal to his formula to aid in helping it stay down but he got extremely constipated so they switched to the Simply Thick.  He still spits up a lot and crys alot - I wonder if something is still going on in his stomach.  He is gaining weight - he now weighs 14 lbs.  He sleeps thru the night but spends most days crying.  Any suggestions?  Could something else be wrong.  The answer we get from his dr. is that he's gaining weight and will outgrow this.

We started him off on Enfam Lipil- than went to Good Start- we ended up in hospital when he was 3 weeks old -had reaction to good start and couldn't break it down- than we went to Enfam. Soybee or how ever you spell it.  He is still currently on the Soy by Enfam.   and is going to be 9 months old on the 26th.   As of about 1 1/2 ago we have stopped given him the Colic Calm.  The dr said they normally out grow between 6 months to year.  We slowly decreased amount and times per day.   He use to cry all the time before we put him on colic calm.  it would take an hour to eat 2 oz and 1 hour to burp him- he did manly burps not baby burps.   he would throw himself back. pull his legs to chest.   He spit up alot as well.   I gave the mylanta to him separate- could give once every 6 hours.   Tell your daughter to have her son sleep on his left side for the night time and alternate sides so he doesn't get flat head during day time naps.  The dr said to have thim sleep on the side will help.   I had to roll a blanket and put it behind my son to get him to stay on side.  If you would like here is my e-mail address that I check more often to give to your daughter ***@****

My daughter-in-law has a couple of questions for you.  How many formulas did you try with your little one?  And what formula are you on now?  Are you still using the Colic Calm and if so how much do you give him a day?  Did your little one just cry alot or also spit up alot?    Did you put the Mylanta in the formula or give it to him separately?

I may get my daughter-in-law on this website so she can talk with you, also.

Thanks for your help

Just an update of our weekend.  Friday night Mom and other Grandma took him to emergency room because he wouldn't stop crying and wasnt eating.  Within 24 hours of getting there - they xrayed his stomach , did a berrium test (some of this may not be spelled correctly) of his intestines, did 2 blood tests to check for "profusion" of his organs, did an upper and lower GI, did an ultrasound of his stomach and a CT scan of his brain.  And guess what - found absolutely nothing wrong anywhere - so the dr suggested switching formula - since Neocate has a side effect of gassiness and constipation.  We switched him to Gentlease on Saturday night - yesterday "Sunday" he was great.  But he does have a history of doing great when there is change and after several days he starts fussing again.  The Colic Calm came in today so I'm getting that to her to try if she needs to.  Will keep you posted

I hope the colic calm works for your grandson like it did for my son.  I started off giving him 1/2 of the dropper in morning than at night.   Than I increased it to the whole dropper.  Within a week or so he became a completely different baby.  He was able to eat, sleep, wasn't in pain and crying all the time.   Which made mom a happier mom as well.   I will keep my fingers crossed for you and your grandson.   It is so horrible to see them in all that pain and not be able to do anything about it.   Like I said in the posting..I had my dr check it out before I started giving it to him and he gave the green light.   We continued to try putting cereal in bottle as well.  Along with mylanta.  But I know it was the colic calm that worked- cause like I said in posting....when we ran out and had to order more-which took a week, within two days of not getting it he was back to his old self - struggling to eat, sleep, in pain, crying nonstop.   I really do hope it helps.  Keep me posted please and again good luck :)

Xanthan Gum is a corn product?  Wow .. that is interesting.  My son couldn't do the rice for the same reason at the same age and barley gave him eczema!

Please please keep us posted!!

Thanks for the Colic Calm - It's on order so we'll see what happens.
Also CCN - checked the ingredients or Simply Thick - the Xanthan Gum is a corn product - so mom has taken him off of that also.  Hopefully we're on the right track.

Thanks for all your help.

Please go read the entry that I posted on May 21 titled To all with Children that have acid reflux.   It's on the 2nd page.   My son is now 8 1/2 months old and around 7 months or so he has been taken off of everything even the colic calm.  Hopefully you will find my posting useful and maybe colic calm with help your grandson.

Thanks for your input.  The Simply Thick contains water, xanthan gum, citric acid,
sodium benzoate (preservative), and potassuim sorbate (preservative).  Don't see any corn or starches.  He seemed to do better with the rice cereal but was really constipated - his mom switched him to oatmeal and barley thinking the fiber would help but it didn't which is why she put him back on the Simply Thick which is what the hospital originally had her use.

A ? for you .. does Simply Thick contain corn or corn starch in it ?  Some who have issues with regular formula cannot tolerate corn either .. just a thought to ask or look into maybe?

WELCOME to the community.

My son is now 10yrs old .. he was born with a huge duplication intestinal cyst and had a bowel resection at 12weeks old .. he cont'd with severe reflux for a very long time so I know what you are going through.  His culprit was caseine . the tiny am't in Alimentum.

Please let us know how things are going and about the Simply Thick.  I've heard of Thick It but not this brand so don't know.
