GERD/ Dyspepsia

by AHigherVibration, Apr 18, 2008 02:56PM
Dear Doctor,

This is what my doctor say I have.  He gave me omeprazole 20 mg and sent me on my way.  Nothing changed.  Had an ultra sound that came back normal, and a barium swallow which showed mild reflux.  I have been having nausea and a little heartburn for almost 4 months.  Never at the same time.... and a lot of pain in my upper abdomen, and stomach.  Another doctor treated me for h. pylori even though it came back neg. because I showed all the symptoms.  I took Clarithromycin 1000mg and amoxicillin 2000mg a day for 10 days.  Still no relief.  Now it is hard to catch my breath.  I feel like I have a brick in my stomach.  I am afraid it might be cancer.

What I would like to know is would those antibiotics take care of the dyspepsia, or is there a special medicine I need to take.  I have been sick for so long.  Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Rene

Hi Rene,
H.pylori is one of the causes for dyspepsia and antibiotics are given to eradicate this organism. Antibiotics thus treat the cause of dyspepsia and not dyspepsia itself.

Since the symptoms are persisting, you may undergo upper GI endoscopy and 24 hours pH monitoring test.

You can continue PPI along with life style modifications.
