Gallbladder and migraines instead of GERD?

by KatieC1026, Apr 26, 2009 11:38AM
I have been diagnosed with GERD and take Aciphex twice a day. If I don't take it for a few days the pain in my right side just under my ribs comes back. At first my doctor suspected my problem was my gall bladder and I had an ultra sound done on it and I had an endoscopy done. The results of both tests didn't show any problems. I have migraines at least once a week and take Nortriptyline and depacote to keep the migraines to occurring only once a week. (Without those drugs, I have the migraines more often.) I've been told by a practitioner in alternative medicine that a bad gall bladder can cause migraines.
Is that true? Could my test results come back normal when I really have a bad gallbladder?
Could that be my problem rather than (or in addition) to GERD?

Have you had a HIDA/CCK done? If you're having GB symptoms without stones you may be looking at gallbladder dyskinesia (Acalculous Gallbladder Disease).

Gallbladder malfunctions can cause all sort of weird symptoms, so I wouldn't put migraines out of the question. Might also be a side effect of the drug. (I used to get migraines while on Nexium. Once I dropped it, the migraines stopped.) In any case, you need to be investigated further.

For the moment, switch to a low fat (<5g fat/meal) diet to see how you feel.

Good luck.
