Gerd - breathing problems? I have seen 3 doctors

by motox320, Jan 10, 2009 05:10PM
The doctors think I have GERD. I have been on nexium for 40 days. 40mm a day in the morning. The reason they think I have GERD is due to breathing problems I Have been having. Just a dull feeling when I exhale all the way (inbetween breaths) in my lungs-chest that is very hard to deal with. It kind of feels like a burn also, makes it feel as I am having major breathing problems. Also, a am 24, male, I def. did have reflux... for years I rem. gaging up food-ect in my throat at night, which woke me up. This prob way better now w Nexium. I have had pulm fun test w -w/o diatlers, all gd, no sign of asmatha. lung xray good. ekg, good. barium swallow showed "small sliding hitial hernia" w-o gerd. Maybe a endoscopy next? but my problem is the breathing, my gerd seems to be under control. My question is can something w GERD- or my throat -esopogas.. cause my breathing discomort? I am in shape, general healthy. This breathing thing is a major problem. (annoying) it comes and goes, last hours to days, then can go away for hours-days-weeks. It is not like asmtha where you have an attack. Just a general discomort that gets bad at times. I do snore at night. oxgen in blood is 99percent. I do get a burning sensation in the middle of my lower chest sometime. I burp allot, mostly air coming up. Any ideas? thankyou so much...  also if i have to get a endocopy in the future, can I get it w-o sedation? would it be that bad without it?

Hi,
Breathlessness/ burning in the chest and burping can occur with GERD.
24hours pH monitoring can be done to confirm the diagnosis. But you may have to stop Nexium at least for 1 week before the test.
Endoscopy will show no findings in 70% of the patients. There is generally no need for sedation during endoscopy.
