Hello,
About 5 months ago, I started having to clear my throat often and also experiencing sore throat. After a few trips to the my primary care doctor and eventually an ENT doctor, I was told that I have silent acid reflux because I did not experience any heart burn and my larynx is inflamed. I was put on Pirolsec twice a day. I was on it for about 4 weeks but it did not give me any relief. Then I was prescribed acidphex. Then two weeks ago, I started to have very bad heart burn systoms as well as burning in the throat. My systoms generally get worse 3 hours after lunch and continue until about 9 a.mthe next day. Then I get a respite for a few hours. Ten days ago, I had an endoscopy done and I was told everything is OK.  The GI doctor doen not even want to do any more with me as if I imagine the symtoms. I know my sysmtoms are real and even tested the PH of my saliva wich is 6.2 when I have the haeartburn very badly. My question is that are the PPI medications doing more harm than good? I follow a very strict diet. I don't eat all the forbidden food for acid reflux. I have difficulty in sleeping because of heartburn and sore throat. I would be grateful for any suggestions to relieve my symtoms.

Sincerely yours,
maggie

Hi mwmaggie888,
Endoscopy is not the confirmatory test for GERD.
The symptoms you have mentioned are suggestive of GERD.
The confirmatory test for GERD is 24 hours pH monitoring.

PPI are very effective and safe drugs. They can be taken after consulting your doctor. PPI are to be taken immediately before food twice a day for 4-8 weeks.Life style modification is also essential for better recovery from symptoms of GERD.

The life style modification includes -

1. Head elevation while sleeping
2. Small frequent meals
3. Going to bed 2- 3 hours after food
4. Avoiding bed time snacks
5. Avoiding smoking and alcohol
6. Avoiding tight fitting clothes
7. Avoiding cola, citrus drinks, carbonated drinks, tea, coffee, spicy food
8. Weight reduction
