GERD (ACID REFLUX) EXPERT FORUM
Heartburn following workout

Heartburn following workout

Hello Dr. Kini,

I am a 25 year old male in good health.  I have never been diagnosed with GERD.  Recently, I began working out with a personal trainer.  I find that on days where our workouts are particularly intense, I inevitably get heartburn.  The heartburn lasts about an hour.  I have tried several different approaches to preventing the heartburn, including not eating for an hour prior to the workout session, but nothing seems to help.  My own research leads me to believe that I have a loose esophageal sphincter.  My question is there anything more I can do to prevent the heartburn?  Also, is there anything I can do once I get the heartburn that will quickly make it dissipate?  I have tried OTC antacids.  They work, but I am hesitant to use them so frequently.

Thank you for your time.

Hi,
Reflux occurs when the lower esophageal sphincter is lax. When the abdominal pressure increases it precipitates acid reflux and this is what is happening when you workout.

PPI are very effective and are generally safe. Antacids are also safe and effective.

In addition to medications, lifestyle modifications are also important to prevent reflux.

Lifestyle modifications ( though all of these may not be applicable to your situation) -
1. Head elevation while sleeping
2. Small frequent meals
3. Going to bed 2- 3 hours after food
4. Avoiding bed time snacks
5. Avoiding smoking and alcohol
6. Avoiding tight fitting clothes
7. Avoiding cola, citrus drinks, carbonated drinks, tea, coffee, spicy food
8. Weight reduction
