Heartburn with backpain

I am a 50 year old male, 5'11" and weigh about 175lbs.  About every three weeks I wake up with slight heartburn and it progressively gets worse. I am on a daily heartburn medicine and no matter what I do or take the pain increases till my upper back begins to ache and I sometimes get flu-like systoms with sweating and getting hot and cold.  The pain usually subsides sometime in the middle of  the night after I've fallen asleep.  The next day I'm fine. I had an Upper GI this past week and they found no problem.  Is there something that I can change in my life to keep this from happening?  Is this some type of spasm?
