Hiatal hernia or not

I have a funny feeling in my throat, i have been diagnosed with GERD and a hiatal hernia. When the attacks come on I feel like i have something caught in my throat and get a nasty taste in my mouth. It is very uncomfortable and sometimes feel like my throat is going to close up. I have been to the ER 3 times this week. Should i be concerned? Please help, i feel like no one believes or understands my complaint.

Hi....I have both gerd and a hiatial hernia also....the nasty taste u speak of is from the gerd being pushed back up ur throat into ur mouth....I am not sure what u mean by funny feeling in ur throat?

Is it possible that u also have post  nasal drip, that could be causing the closed up feeling?.....is this y u have been to the ER...the closed up feeling?

What kind of dr have u been seen by?...ur PCP should send u to a Gastro dr as well as a ENT.

I do hope u r on meds for the gerd as all that acid will do damage.

The closed up feeling is like something is caught in the back of my throat and spasming. It happens in flare ups, comes and goes. I have a GI specialist and my next appointment is next month. I am taking Zantac, Prilosec, Bentyl and Carafate.Sometimes I feel a yawning feeling in my throat and stomach. I am a surgical technologist, so I do know alot about this condition, but when these episodes happen it scares me. I don't experience heartburn, just pressure from my stomach up into my esophagus. I have chest and neck pains in these episodes. I have had an ECG and labs on my heart enzymes, they are normal. Just don't want to live the rest of my life with these feelings.

Oh...ok I get that at times too.I also get a cramp like feeling when I yawn.....it is really a strange feeling.
May I ask...do u also have IBS?

If I remember correctly, my gastro dr told me that my hiatial hernia shouldn't cause too much trouble because of where it is located.Are u aware of this and do u know where ur's is located? I just wonder how the location can affect u.

Also may I ask have u had ur thyroid checked?I know I have Hashimoto's and I get heart palps and I also had my heart checked and it is fine.

I am familiar with Zantac and Prilosec but I do not know Bentyl or Carafate.

I pray ur episodes lessen and u find the cause and can get it treated.

I have the same things happen to me, I've had heartburn for awhile but it totally seemed to go away then came back strong.  I was put on Omeprazole 20mg 1xday and a zantac after eating something that would trigger.  It seems to have calmed down the problems with food coming back up my throat but I still am getting the heart palps and ALWAYS feel like I cant sit still now.  I haven been checked/texted for everything I can imagine including vitamin B12 defiency and thyroid issues, ekgs etc and everything is great.  I dont get it.  Dr said its possible I could have hiatal hernia too.  Do you know if these things could be related to pounding heart and constant restlesness??

Hi....I have the same issues and I have the heart palps without knowing what is causing it...I do have a hiatial hernia, and hashimoto's thyroiditis too.

May I ask, did ur dr just do labs to check for thyroid or was an US done?
The reason I ask this is bcuz my labs r normal,but the US showed nodules on my thyroid indicating hashinoto's.

Also I found with hashi's ther r diff labs required to be able to recognize it as hashi's.
The thyroid forum here on MedHelp was very helpful with that info.

Did u also have ur vitamin D levels checked as well as ur calcium and potassium or magnessium levels?

It could also be that ur r stressed....

I get the chest pains and restlessness, sometimes I get the rush and a fear. Dr. said could be an adrinaline response. another Dr suggested that maybe my stomach needs to use more blood during the digestive process and that could be part of it. I know what you are talking about. I have been in to the er 3 or 4 times have 3 or 4 ekgs, cadio enzimes, and a stress test all are very normal and heart rate is normal but it certianly feels like its my heart sometimes. I have Gerd/reflux/hiatial hernia
