Infant Relux/bloody stoole

My daughter is 6 months old with reflux.  We just took her to the GI specialist who said she had blood in her stoole.  She is on Reglan and prevacid.  She is getting an upper GI study.

Any other meds that can help?  Advise.  I also had twin girls that suffered from reflux.  I hate the answer they will just grow out of it around 12 months.

Thanks .... and also thanks on posting to ck. with your Pedi before doing Gripe Water as many brands have different ingredients and you want to be sure it is ok with your Dr. and, of course, the above listed too ...

I am all for homeopathic coupled with regular tradtitional meds although I really only know on the traditional methods.

That is what makes this community such a wonderful place to share ideas ... you can present any/all o fthem plus your own to your Dr. and figure out what is best for you!

My 4 1/2 month has acid reflux.   We have him on soy formula and zytanx or how every you spell it and mylanta.   I did some research on line and found this stuff called Colic Calm that has been a life saver to us.   My son, for the first two months all he did was scream.   He spit up all the time.  Could only eat an oz at a time if that and than he would throw himself backwards and pull his legs towards his chest.  He wouldn't sleep either.   We started him on the Colic Calm stuff.   A form of Gripe water.   Had my ped look into it first before I gave it to him.   Wasn't sure if that was working or the other two things he was on.  We ran out of it and had to order some more.   It took a week to get the order in the mail.   (regular del.)   Within two days of not having an Colic Calm he reverted back to his old ways.   Once the stuff came in mail, the next day he was better again.   He is eating 6 oz. now no problems.   We give him two cereal bottles a day.  He will sleep from 8:00-4:00 take 1 oz and than sleep until 6:15 now.  Sometime I can get him to go back down by putting pacifier back in his mouth so he'll sleep thru the night.   I am telling everyone I can about this stuff.   It was been such a blessing for us.   My little guy is happy, coo's and laughs.    He is a completely different baby.    It's all natural and approved by FDA.   Look it up on the internet and see what other parents are saying about it.  It works I swear by it

Oh . rice .. can cause the constipation and add to that, too .. sometimes barley works better . oatmeal can constipate too and also milk allergy/intolerance can rear its ugly head with constipation as a symptom .. not always loose stools!

I agree and disagree with your ped.  But I'm not a Dr.  My son couldn't tolerate any solid food for 2yrs and was under the guidance of a Pedi GI and Nutritionist during that time ... as soon as the tiny bit of hypoallergenic caseine in Alimentum was removed and replaced with Rice Milk his reflux went away.

I'd push your Dr to switch to Nutramigen or Alimentum.  I agree with your GI . It will be one more element out of the picture as you are a detective now.

Enfamil AR is still milk and milk can produce bloody stools.  and if the intestines are all messed up so may the stomach in not wanting solids yet ?????

Just my 2 cents having been there ... ask your ped and trust your instincts .. what are your thoughts???

I cannot see Nutramigen or Alimentum making a difference in your baby's diet nutrion wise .. taste is another subj.  but you switch gradually .. and keep in mind 3 weeks to rid the system of wll milk goods.

Thank you for your support.  The GI specialist suggested removing milk based formula.  She is on Enfamil AR with atleast 2 more TBSP of rice in each bottle.  However, her pediatrition said more than likely since she is also spitting up baby food and solids that is is not a milk allergy.
I am not sure if the UGI is going to include the small ibowel. I hope.  I have never notice the blood her bowels are mostly dark, black, grey, green.  She is definetly constipated.

MOST grow out by 12mos .. those that don't need more specialized care, etc. to really try to find out the root of the problem and others who present with symptoms such as blood, aspiration, non weight gain, etc. get tested and followed more closely before that 12mo mark.  That good 'ol phrase about outgrowing it makes me cringe, but most do .. however, not the friends I've known online for the past 9yrs who have dealt and continue to deal with it in one way or another .. even if it only sneaks in with illness .. many times it doesn't ever go away 100% if that bad as an infant!

Are the doing an Upper GI with small bowel followthru?

The blood can come from inflammation, allergy too is a consideration.  Is your daughter on milk-based formula, breastfed, soy ? combo, etc.  I ask bcz sometimes the blood is allergy driven and the Dr will test with biopsies if they do an endoscopy and colonsocopy at some pt in the future.

Can you see the blood?  What color or invisible to the eye?  Different colors are different parts of the intestinal track .. I'm just a mom like you .. not  Dr. but have seen and been thru some of this myself with my children, too.

Taking your daughter off milk based products and foods (allow 3 weeks to fully clear out) may be helpful in determining what is causing the blood .. but need your Dr's ok along the way .. even though allergy tests are negative the blood an dinflammation can still be there and reflux is caused by the milk, soy, corn as major reflux triggers.

Hope this helps .. keep posting .. and WELCOME TO THE GERD (reflux) COMMUNITY!
