Is it GERD

For several years Mayo has been treating me for GERD (severe).  16 months ago, I experieneced what I thought was a heart attack and took myself too the ER where they kept me overnight.  This has happened 3 times.  Mayo has done a complete batter of testts on me including ultra sounds of the bladder, colonoscopy, lliver, gallbladder, ovaries, etc.  I was  burning from the time I woke in the morning until I got up and then it stopped.  They suggested 2 Nexium a day which has helped with the burning.  I now experience buring of the shins, burning of the vaginia and rectum and they are still calling it GERD.  I take Tyelenol or Darvocet N100 and it helps but doesn't eliminate the pain in the rectum.  I hve normal BMs followed sometimes by mucosy ones and thin ones. I also experience low back pain with these symptoms.  This problem wakes me during the night.  It seems that it can't possibly be GERD but what do I know?  Thank you for your help.

The vaginal pain was so intense that I got on line and looked up vaginal burning and it suggested a kit for UTI and sure enough that was part of my problem and I called my gyencologist and he put me on Macrobid and within 4 days the burning and back pain subsided.  Now, I am still having a burning in the rectum and the burning from the pubic bones to the sternum; have had another visit to an urgent care center because of the severe pain.  They gave me a GI cocktail Maaox and Donatal which helped but hasn't eliminated the problem.  Thank you for your earlier response.  JZF

Try modifiying your diet and see how you feel...I have been diagnosed with gerd also, but felt that my diet was part of my problems.....I have tried to become gluten free and avoid chili, spagetti sauce and any other spicy foods......I have also gone to a naturopath .......I am certainly feeling better.....try any or all of the above...good luck

Hi,
Burning of shin, burning vagina, rectum, low back ache are not signs of GERD.
This could be part of functional disorder.
You may discuss with your doctor regarding this possibility.
A functional disorder however is diagnosed only after organic causes are ruled out.
