Is this CF?

Is this CF?

My daughter is almost 2 and a half and over the last two months she went from 23 pounds to 18.5lbs.  She has been throwing up every night for 3 weeks in her sleep not related to coughing or choking.  She only throws up while sleeping.  She is congested almost every day of her life.  She is not eating well and has decreased energy levels.  She has always been small but now she is dangerously small.   Her pediatrician did blood work and urine analysis they came back normal.  They are now sending us to a gastroenterologist and also testing for cystic Fibrosis.  Does this sound consistent with CF and do you have any other suggestions.

When you say congested, is it a rattle from her chest?  My son used to aspirate thin liquids or foods (meaning, it would go down his windpipe and into his lungs) and he'd get aspiration pneumonia.  They kept calling him a happy wheezer bc he wheezed all the time.

The way they check for aspiration is by a MODIFIED BARIUM SWALLOW evaluation.  This is a study where they x-ray the child while they are eating and/or drinking.  They tested my son for CF too btw... and it turned out to be ASPIRATION.  Given your daughter's age, I don't know what to say, my son was under a year when he had this and it was treated with an OT doing feeding therapy.  He's now almost 7 and thriving.

Good luck in your quest for answers.  God bless.

Hello and Welcome to the Pediatric (GERD) Reflux Community~

After reading your post and the above listed response, coupled with my first thoughts, is that they usually will do all sorts of testing on a child whose reflux (or GER) will not go away.  The diagnosis can be one of exclusion so do not get too worried as you wait for the test and results.  I have a friend who went thru what you are going through, along with marked delays in development, etc., and he was normal .. just immature GI tract, etc.  So please keep us posted and let us know how you are doing.

The happy wheezer .. do they say they hear actual wheezing in his chest?  Or is it that mucousy rattle deep in the throat that makes that gurgle?  Has he or is he on asthma meds such as Albuterol, or steroids through a nebulizer or inahled or via mouth at all?

Has he been hospitalized for the wheezing?

I'm not a Dr .. just a mom like you, and I've heard that term replied to children who have some wheezing but with no defined reason for it .. it doesn't affect their quality of life or cause secondary issues such as aspiration ..but this is what I've heard and not been told and again, I'm not a Dr.

Let us know and please keep in touch with us here !
