Is this GERD?

Hi everyone,

I'm new to the forum and hope someone can put my mind at rest - I suffer with health anxiety so am quick to think that my symptoms are more serious than they really are.

My main complaint is an uncomfortable feeling while swallowing food. It centres around the breastbone and usually last only a few seconds while the food settles into my stomach.  I would describe it as heartburn (sometimes a sharp pain) and generally occurs with larger, more solid foods. I rarely feel anything after eating food. My other symptoms include a hoarse voice, increased belching, wanting to clear my throat and the occasional acid feeling around the same place on my chest.

A friend died last year of oesphageal cancer so that is in the back of my mind too.

Thanks very much

Hi there,

I would definitely advice you to get a referral to a Gastro Enterologist for and Endoscopy.  It sounds like you have GERD symtoms and the best way to be sure is to get this test done.

It is the things in life that we DON'T know and UNSURE of that makes us anxious.  So once you've had some tests and answers, then you know what you are dealing with and will become less anxious about it.

All the best and let us know how you are doing.

Go to a Naturopathic Doctor, they will diagnose and treat it naturally if they can, but if they can't they will prescribe your medication just like a Medical Doctor. this this link or copy and paste it and find one in your area....

Sodium bicarbonate helped a little. I'm now taking a tablet which contains Omeprazole? Trying this for a week and then shall go to my doctors if it doesnt clear up.

It's good to know that low acid can cause GERD as well, so I will keep that in mind too.

My anxiety makes medical issues quite difficult to handle even though I know there probably isnt anything to worry about.

Thanks for your help!

Sounds like it.

Did you take any sodium bicarbonate product and did it help? If you have to much acid this usually temporarily helps. If over the counter Prilosec helps then its most likely high acid levels.

Low acid can also cause reflux/gerd from improper digestion. In this Prilosec and other Proton Pump Inhibitors (a class of acid reducing drugs) do not work and might cause more digestive problems. Then, a good brand of digestive enzymes from a local health food / vitamin store usually helps.

Figuring out what food groups cause it also helps - its a little different for everyone.

If you've had this for a while, its also best to get a couple of Drs opinions (not just one if you can afford it).

This forum can give you a lot of tips/ideas to cope.
