Lansoprazole - how long does it take to work?

by sallyann27, Nov 27, 2008 04:57AM

Could you tell me how long it takes for Lansoprazole to take effect please? I've been prescribed 15mg in the morning and 15mg in the evening. I am feeling extremely nauseous but have only started the tablets this morning, hopefully it wont take too long.

Is there anything I can eat or drink in the meantime to help relieve the nausea and burning sensation. and also does it matter when you take the tablet as long as you wait a while before eating?

Many thanks,
SA

Hi,
The peak blood levels are attained in 2-5 hours and the effect can be seen by then. A steady suppressive effect on acid production is acheived in 4-5 days.

The medication has to be taken just before eating. Eating makes the proton pump active and lansoprazole which is a proton pump inhibitor will start to act better.
