Research indicates bone issues can result when these drugs are taken over a long period of time. That being said, I took them for a very long time with no problem of bone problems and good blood tests. Also, I had a couple of operations that required bones being cut (foot surgery and open heart surgery) and both surgeons noted in my operative reports I had extremely dense bone structure. I exercise daily, both aerobic and weight training and suspect exercise trumps any damage drugs can cause, but keep in mind, this is just an opinion.
Long term use of proton pump inhibitors to treat acid reflex and GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease) may increase the risk of osteoporosis and hip fractures, according to a Canadian study published in 2008. Proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) block the production of hydrochloric acid in the stomach.
The study, which included 63,000 Canadians over the age of fifty, studied prescription records and medical records amongst other factors. 15,300 participants had a history of osteoporosis fractures, including spine, wrist and hip fractures.
Study participants who had histories of osteoporosis-related fractures were almost twice as likely to have used proton pump inhibitors for at least seven years when compared to other participants.
Hi...new studies show long term use of these meds r not good for us...and if u r taking ne med long term u should be under care of a Dr that is doing routine labs to monitor ur vitamin and mineral levels.
SO to answer ur question yes, they can add to this issue.....and u do need to monitor ur levels and take supplements.
Better still is to find the root of ur reflux/GERD and try to step off the meds slowly otherwise u can be affected with what is known as rebound.
We need the good bacteria to help break down the foods we eat, and taking these meds removes the acids....u may also want to find out if ur problem is too much or too little acid as it can feel the same...but the meds will make u feel worse.
Talk to ur Dr about ur concerns
