No more coffee???!!!

To all of you fellow reflux sufferers, have you ever tried the organic coffees, and if so do they really taste like real coffee?  I am desperately trying to replace my morning jo with hazelnut creamer......:-(

I didn't drink coffee at all for 3 months until I got the GERD under control with medication.  Then I found a coffee called "KAVA" that is 90 % acid free.  If I stick to one cup in the morning, I feel okay.  It is good, tastes a little bit milder than regular coffee but you get used to the change quick when you are missing your morning coffee.

Has anyone tried a Naturopath for you your GERD?  I'm looking into this as my chiropractor recommended one to me.

Oh I see your dilemma. Neither tea nor coffee bothers me acid reflux wise. I did not quit drinking coffee because of my acid reflux, I quit drinking it because caffeine, while it can be beneficial in very small amounts, is generally not good for the body as it is taxing on the adrenal system. Also because I was quitting smoking and coffee and cigarettes seem to go hand-in-hand, so it was easier for me to quit smoking that way. So anyways the chai does work for me. I think we are all different in what triggers acid reflux. Sorry I could not be of more help but I hope you find something that works for you as well :)

Hi amanda,

It is my understanding that any tea, including black chai tea is on the no-no list as well.  I am desperate to find a coffee replacement.  I am only drinking 1 cup in the AM, and it does bother me, but I need to somehow not go cold turkey,as I am already headache prone.

Hi and welcome to the forum.
Thanks for sharing the info on the toddy pot. I do not think the discussion says coffee is bad for the body, but it can have an effect on someone that has excess acid in their system and already does not feel well.Coffee is an acid drink and will add to the acid already in the stomach such as OJ will.

Moderation is always a good way to go with most things....but until u r feeling better it is best to avoid those u know will cause a flare.

You can also try a Toddy Pot. It is a way of "cold" brewing coffee. It's used to make a concentrate for hot or cold coffee drinks and is supposed to reduce acid content. I like cold/iced coffee.
Also, in my opinion, coffee is not bad for the body - TOO MUCH coffee is bad for the body. As with everything in life, moderation is the key.

Hi there :) I quit drinking coffee in October after 11 years of being a devout coffee drinker lol. I didn't quit drinking it because of acid reflux, just because it's not good for the body. I wanted to let you know I switched to black chai tea with soymilk for creamer and I love it. Am now in the process of making the switch to decaf tea as well. I have also read that roasted dandelion tea is reminiscent of coffee, but haven't tried it myself.

I've been drinking Teeccino for about a week now. The taste isn't EXACTLY like coffee, so the taste gets some getting used to, but the qualities are very similar, so if you like coffee you'll likely find this a pleasant drink.

As far as acid is concerned, since I introduced this into my diet my acid reflux has been non-existant. Mind you, it's not an even test: I'm also using Protonix and Iberogast, so all I may have proven is that it won't make your heartburn worse, rather than making it better. In either case, it really DOES work as a very good coffee alternative and doesn't seem to have any of the bad side effects.

Also, it's wonderful with (fat free) ice cream.

Hi...if u have a pharmacist u can talk to to make sure the claims this product makes at the link I provided...then by all means go ahead and try it.....rememebr even tho it appears safe u may still get a reaction....not all safe foods on a list will be safe for everyone.

The claims about absorbtion are very interesting and I hope they are right....bcuz the PPI's we take for acid actually cause our bodies to absorb less of what our bodies need....

I am tempted to try this also, but I am not a coffee drinker.....let me know what u think...and see what ur pharmacist says....sounds like a great product.

Hi, I guess I should be more clear as to what type of organic coffee I am referring to.  Please see link below.

HI...I am not a coffee drinker, but organic coffee is still coffee...it is grown organically...which means no chemical fertilizers ect....

Coffee is very acidic and old coffee grounds are used to add acid to the soil for acid loving plants.

U have too much acid in ur system and coffee will add more.

I am sure once u have control of ur acid, u may in time be able to have ur coffee on occasion....not as a daily ritual.
